Re: why is calling a black person 'colored' negative?
Posted by MissRadiant
I think it is offensive. When I hear someone use the word colored it makes me think that we are living in the South a couple of decades ago where segregation still exists.
I dont think Lohan meant the use of the word colored in a negative way but I think the term is definitely outdated.
ITA with these two statements. The word brings to my mind pictures of water fountains with the word "colored" over one.

Well Lohan's comment wasn't as bad as Silvio Berlusconi calling Obama "suntanned."

Re: why is calling a black person 'colored' negative?
When I think of the word "colored," I think of the segegrated water fountains and the signs that said "colored."
The NAACP has been around for a long time and has continued with the same name. I do not think that has to mean that they support the use of that word. I worked at a place whose name was a bunch of initials that no longer even described what they did, but they held on to the name as the organization morphed.
Lindsey Lohan is from Long Island and I do not know where she would have picked up that word. I don't hear it around here.

Re: why is calling a black person 'colored' negative?
Because "colored" was derived from the days of segregation which was negative treatment of "african americans" therefore, it seems very negative.
Why Lohan said that is beyond me, she didnt grow up down south many moons ago, so its sounds wierd and stupid for somone especially her age to say that.

the correct term would be African American
My personal opinion, not to cause controversy, but I find this worse because it assumes that all black people are from Africa. What about people from the Carribean?
good point, as I am from the West Indies...
I understand not all black people are from the U.S., but if you are "black", no matter where you are "from", didn't your ancestors start out in Africa?

I agree
on another note- I teach in a school where most kids are from the caribbean and they dont call themselves african-american either....they call themselves jamaican, haitian, Trinidadian, ect... I think it depends on who you are talking to
funny story though- last year i taught 2nd grade and my kids were having a conversation on the carpet when we were about to start a lesson and i had one "white" kid in my class and the kids were just pointing out that he was white (they werent being mean but they were just kinda all talking about their skin color) and the kid was like "so what Ms. V... is white" and one of my kids goes "No she's not, shes light skinned" and it just made me laugh because im as white as can be haha but i just explained to them that we are all different colors and that none of us are really white or black and that we were all different shades of colors and that its cool that we were all different, because if we were all exactly the same that would be boring

Well if you think about it, we all sort of come from Africa.

Re: why is calling a black person 'colored' negative?
When i was little I did a report on Martin Luther King and didn't know how to word a correct term for african american. I remember my grandma calling them colored people and I figured since she's old she's smart so every time I should have written African American i wrote colored people and my mom proof read my report and made me change all my colored people's to African American's. I didn't get it and it was hard for her to explain to a 9 year old why it was wrong. Even now I can kind of see why it's wrong and maybe even a little derogatory to call someone colored but I have no idea how to explain it.

I agree with this and I always wondered are Charlize Theron and Dave Matthews African Americans ?
Because they are from South Africa. Both of them.

It's an old term indicative of a certain time in history. I don't think it was used to be derogatory. If it is considered offensive, then they should change the name of the NAACP.
Good point.
Apparently - people are trying to make a big stink about Lohan calling Pres. Obama colored... I didn't think she meant anything bad by it.
What they didn't say was she was drunk and high and thought his color was green

Also, African American wouldn't apply when referring to people of African ancestry who live in Europe etc.

American's weren't very kind to the immigrants when they first came... Many American's moved west when the immigrants came to the US...
