Re: WHY is it so bad if we CHOOSE an induction???

We chose to induce- my doc couldn't find a heartbeat but then did and the stress of being pregnant was killing me. I just couldn't take the worry anymore. I don't see anything wrong with it.

Re: WHY is it so bad if we CHOOSE an induction???

I don't think its bad at all! I think the only thing is to be prepared for the possibility of a failed induction. Also, my induction was a slightly horrific affair...I did not expect it to be, so I wish I had been warned that it would be a long hard slog!

I think you should go for it! lots of people have great experiences!!

eta..I would never in a million years choose an induction before/at my due date. I would wait until my doctor said it was a medical necessity. I was 11 days late...and 3 of those days was the induction!!!

I see nothing wrong with being induced. I was and it was the best decision for me and the baby. You need to do what is right for you!

Re: WHY is it so bad if we CHOOSE an induction???

Totally a personal decision. Go with your gut and doctor's recommendation.

I personally would not even consider it until after my due date unless there was a medical reason to do it before. With Nate, I was schedule for induction at 41 weeks but I went into labor on my own the day before. With Jayden, we scheduled the induction for 2 days after my due date. And it was a great experience.

Re: WHY is it so bad if we CHOOSE an induction???

Not bad...just these are the negative aspects

The primary risk you face if you're induced is that the induction won't work and you'll need a cesarean. The process of ripening the cervix and then inducing labor with oxytocin can take a long time. If you still haven't gone into labor after 24 to 48 hours, your practitioner may consider it a failed attempt and you'll have to deliver by c-section. This process can be very hard psychologically on you and your partner. What's more, having a c-section after a failed induction is associated with higher rates of complications, especially infection, and longer hospital stays.

In addition, certain techniques, including using Pitocin, prostaglandins, or nipple stimulation, occasionally hyperstimulate the uterus (meaning you have contractions that come too often or are abnormally long and strong), which in turn can stress your baby. In rare cases, prostaglandins or Pitocin also cause placental abruption or even uterine rupture, though ruptures are extremely rare in women who've never had a c-section or other uterine surgery. (Prostaglandins are associated with a relatively high rate of rupture in women attempting a vaginal birth after a cesarean (VBAC), so they should never be used if that's the case. And some experts don't think women attempting VBAC should be induced with Pitocin, either.)

To assess both the frequency and length of your contractions as well as your baby's heart rate, you'll need to have continuous electronic monitoring during an induced labor. In most cases you have to lie or sit while being monitored, but some hospitals offer telemetry, which lets you walk around during the process.

Don't let anyone make you feel bad for choosing what is right for you. I would tell her nicely to mind her own business and to not worry so much about your decisions. We've had comments thrown at us because we are having a c-section and people assume it's because we wanted to choose the day he's born. I don't even bother to explain anymore it's because of my own health issues and not because of what they think. Don't feel bad!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: WHY is it so bad if we CHOOSE an induction???

I had a planned induction. It went well aside from the fact the I wound up with a c-section. I knew this was a possibility from the jump so It was not that bad...everything went very smoothly

Why is it bad?

I would say because it's artificially starting labor. You know what, sometimes you need to do that.

I don't think anyone should have the audacity to tell anyone else how they should deliver their baby. It's a psychological, physical and huge personal decision.

If you want induction & your ob is ok with it, go for it.Chat Icon

Very well said. This is why I didn't want to be induced.

However, this is your decision and it's really none of her business.

Re: WHY is it so bad if we CHOOSE an induction???

It's not so bad. In fact, since you've already been down that road, you know exactly what you're getting yourself into. But like others have said, inductions can go either way. I was induced after ebing 6 days late as per Dr's orders and had a great experience. My friend had a failed induction (they actually sent her home) and then the tried again a week later and she wound up with a c-section. Chat Icon So you never know. But you never know even if you go into labor on your own. So 6 of one, and haf dozen of the other. Tell your sister to mind her business. Chat Icon

Re: WHY is it so bad if we CHOOSE an induction???

There are risks associated with being overdue as well. I forgot to tell you that my Aunt called me the night before my induction to tell me Cervadil causes brain problems in infants and to not be induced because I might harm my baby. First off her facts were way off, and secondly what kind of family member does that??? As long as you and DH are comfortable with the decision, that's all that matters

The placenta may deteriorate. The placenta is designed to work for about 40 weeks from the time of conception. Most placentas function a bit longer than that, but in some cases the placenta deteriorates to the point where it can no longer provide the baby with the nutrients he needs to thrive. This can cause the baby to lose weight.

Your baby may be very large. If your placenta is still in top form, your baby may continue to gain weight after your due date has passed. In this case you may give birth to an extra large baby, which may put you at increased risk of delivery complications.

Amniotic fluid levels may drop. The amount of amniotic fluid your baby floats around in begins decreasing from about the 34th to 36th week of gestation. If a pregnancy continues too long, the amniotic fluid level can drop so low that your baby is at increased risk of settling onto the umbilical cord, creating a compression problem.

Your baby could inhale meconium. The longer your baby remains in the uterus, the greater the chance he will pass his first bowel movement in the uterus. If this happens, the baby could breathe in some meconium, the black, sticky, tar-like substance in your baby's bowels, before or during the birth. This could lead to breathing problems during the first days of life.

People are morons, I heard some comments about why I was inducing when I was 35 weeks and one of my children stopped growing and they wanted to get him out asap and didn't want me to wait to go into labor. If your Dr iis okay with it, an that is what you and DH are comfortable with, screw everyone else and their comments.

Re: WHY is it so bad if we CHOOSE an induction???

When your baby is ready to be born and its lungs are fully matured, a chemical is released which signals your body to begin labor. After 36 wks, you are considered full-term and most dr's have no problem with induction after that point. But the baby's lungs are actually the ones that start your labor when he/she is ready to come out. This is why some baby's end up on oxygen for a little while after birth.

Re: WHY is it so bad if we CHOOSE an induction???

I was hesitant about an induction because I really wanted to avoid a C -section--the possibility of a c-section increases with an induction

also, my baby was 9 days late and came on its own---he was only 6 lbs 13oz--my dr was talking induction a MONTH before my due date---I am glad I listened to myself or my baby would have been born premie
