I just asked my co-worker the same question.
She didn't have an answer.

Re: Why isn't today a National Day?
do you mean a holiday?
I certainly hope it will never be "another day off" because it will lose its meaning and just become a day off....like Veterans day has become...

Yes but to call it a Holiday just seems wrong. I just find it so hard to concentrate and all I can think about is what happened. I feel it should be a day off for people to reflect and mourn.

This is how I feel.
It is officially known as Patriot's Day. Honestly, I'm glad I am at work and I get to stop and take those moments of silence.

Re: Why isn't today a National Day?
dh was there when it happened and his building is still standing. he has to work today. he is actually working from home becuase its too chaotic to get downtown to his job with the memorial being moved to a park area. i agree its should be a day off especially for those who lost someone or who where there.

Re: Why isn't today a National Day?
I don't think that is necessary; we stop, we reflect, we remember. We don't need to sit home...we need to be at work getting on with life, but all the while, never forgetting. This is the darkest day in our history....I don't think we should do anything differently....

ITA...
I am where I was on 9/11/01 - at my office, 2 blocks away from Ground Zero.
I've come in here to work every year since (except the year it was on a Saturday) for at least part of the day.
The first year, my mom made me go to work. She told me it was important to share this day with the people I was with on 9/11/01.

There are lots of holidays that businesses aren't closed. I work on Columbus and Veteran's Day because the market is open yet it's still a holiday.
ETA: Why do some think it should be a holiday? When I think of holidays, I think of Christmas, New Year's, and Thanksgiving...all things that are celebrated. I understand that Memorial Day may not exactly be a celebration but it is a day honoring those that have served this country and they are celebrated as is Veteran's Day.

Re: Why isn't today a National Day?
i agree that while the idea of a day off to reflect and mourn would be good, i also see how other days ( like memorial day, veterans day, columbus day) have become just "days off" and have lost their meaning after so many years. i think it not having "off' will keep 9/11 in the front of our minds instead of it becoming another day off

I don't agree. I think people will always remember.
I also disagree. I don't think people can forget what happened on 9/11. It's impossible to forget such a horrible and tragic day. Even 10, 20 or 30 years from now. People will remember.
I agree however that it shouldn't be a holiday where you get the day "off" to reflect and mourn. It will just turn into another holiday where you BBQ and stuff. Just like Memorial Day. It should just stay as it is...We take our moment to reflect and remember those we have lost today.

We were discussing the same thing at work yesterday. I brought up the point that Pearl Harbor Day is also not a national holiday. I think that was also a very tragic day.
exactly.
the thing about having it be a regular work day is going to the city...feeling it...I got out of the train station, turned to my left, and saw Ground Zero. I walked towards my office, and walked past tons of Police Officers and firemen, and the bells they were tolling to ring off the different times.
I walked passed mourners on their way to the ceremony and to the pit.
I saw it in a way I couldn't possibly see it at home, in Brooklyn...having a BBQ or whatever else we now do on Memorial Day.
since the main purpose of the attack was to cripple our financial heart, I don't think shutting it down that day is the way to go.
stocks need to be traded, deals brokered...the world needs to see our heart BEAT on this day, more than any other...IMO.

Im sure they said the same thing about Pearl Harbor day....and do any of us REALLY feel the pain that our grandparents felt that day? I dont think so....
and unfortunatly, 9/11 will be the same way 50 years from now....

Re: Why isn't today a National Day?
I don't think we need a day off to think or pray, and I think it would be another way of showing the terrorists that they succeeded in crippling us. This was discussed when it happened, and it was decided that the best way to commemorate the day was to show how strong and united we are as a country, and show that this has not ruined us. Shutting down Wall Street, banks, etc., would be giving them just what they want.

Very well said. ITA!
It's also sending a message to all the terrorists saying that they didn't break us. They saddened us deeply but they did not cripple us forever...
