My husband lost his cousin. I'm sure we won't forget. But if we hadn't lost him I would still feel some pain for the loss that the victims families feel.
9/11 will always be remembered as the most horrible day our nation has ever had. Almost 3,000 people died 6 years ago, do I have to be related to them to feel the pain of a loss, no?...I do feel some pain for all the families today in addition to my DH's....
yes...you are family....Im not saying that you wont forget...but do you honestly think that someone from Kansas...that didnt loose someone in 9/11 will remember this day as someone that worked/lived or lost someone in NY that day???
I'm from NY and still remember the destruction and the devastion caused by Hurricane Katrina. I'm from NY and still remember the devastations of the Tsunami...
you are talking about things that happened DURING your lifetime.....what I am saying is that people...50 years from now are NOT going to remember 9/11 as we, the ones that lived though it...
Do you feel for the victims of Pearl Harbor???

For being honest? Well then maybe I am. I just don't understand how this topic can become an argument over who's better than who, those were your words not mine. As a human being I feel it is my duty to remember the things that have shaped this world and to teach my children about those things so that they never do become forgotten. JMO take it how you like.
I agree...NEVER to be forgotten but the next generations to come will never FEEL the same way we do about 9/11....we lived through it....they will read about it in history books......

Re: Why isn't today a National Day?
Right now, I honestly would not want 9/11 made a national holiday b/c I would be disgusted to see it as another sale day or day off from work. I remember today every year when I get on the train and come to work and prove that I'm not afraid to be in NYC today.

I don't think that is necessary; we stop, we reflect, we remember. We don't need to sit home...we need to be at work getting on with life, but all the while, never forgetting. This is the darkest day in our history....I don't think we should do anything differently....
i agree
i think employers should be sensitive enough to allow those employees who might want to take the day to reflect and mourn to do so.. but i don't think a national "holiday" is necessary

We all feel for them.
However, I bet if you were to ask 100 people on the street to tell you the DATE of Pearl Harbor day 90 of them wouldn't know.
It has become just another day except for those who were close to it (living in Hawaii or with relatives involved).
Hell, even the movie failed.
The point several people are trying to make is that in 20-30 years from now, it won't be as in the forefront of people's mind as it is now except by those who were close to it.

I think the problem with making it a "holiday" and getting the day off is that in most parts of the country (not NY or DC) people will just use it as a day for bbqs and to go shopping etc. It will not be used as a day of rememberance.
This did not affect other parts of the nation in the same way it affected NY so while it may no be true for NY it will be considered "just another day off" in other parts of the nation. I prefer it the way that it is now that to think in a few years people will be saying "oh, what are you doing for 9/11 - oh we are going to a BBQ".
We may all remember but the next generation will not...such is life...
edited for spelling
I agree. I live in CO and it wasn't even mentioned once today. I'm sure it was on the news at some point but it wasn't any kind of headline. While it was a tragedy for all Americans I think the impact on people who live in NY is very different. It is easy for those of us who dont' live there and who didn't live there at the time to move on.

This quote right here proves Lisa's point. Do you really think this is the most horrible day this nation has ever lived through? There have been many many devastating events. This one happened in your lifetime and affected you and your family, so this is the one that you feel most deeply. There's nothing wrong with that at all, but you can't expect future generations, or even people that didn't experience it the way you did, to feel the same especially as time goes on.

Re: Why isn't today a National Day?
Sad but true: I think there's a concern about the holiday being used as a sale holiday in a few short years. Think about all the ads and "sales" for what should be somber holidays like Veteran's Day and Memorial Day. Martin Luther King Day is even now a shopping day. In our consumer world, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a day off for 09/11, in 15-20 years, it would mean sales breaks

do you mean a holiday?
I certainly hope it will never be "another day off" because it will lose its meaning and just become a day off....like Veterans day has become...
I TOTALLY AGREE!!!!!!
Right? I just had this vision of stores boasting a "September 11th sale"
