why won't my baby burp??
i don't' know what to do?? we try every position for her... she often gives a little burp but then still ends up spitting up either with the little burp or if we put her down some time later... i'm worried she's spitting up and not getting nourishment...
not to mention she has bags under eyes (as do DH and I because she's up every 2 hours and has barely slept last night) help!

Re: why won't my baby burp??
I hated the burping. It drove me nuts. Sometimes DS would burp right away and sometimes it took longer. How long do you burp for before giving up?
Did you try sitting her on your lap and resting her chin on one of your hands and with the other hand patting her back?

Awhile ago i was told if you put baby on lap so that head is by your knees and feet by your stomach and lower head down and then bend her up towards you then it should bring up some gas. Not sure if it works.

seriously we try for about 45 mins - 1 hour w/o a burp. Meanwhile i'm bf'ing so she needs to burp in between breasts - needless to say the feedings seem to last FOREVER. she is only 2 1/2 weeks old - how do i know if she's colicky?
my mom thinks i'm rushing her but she seems to rarely smile...

Re: why won't my baby burp??
DS takes a while to burp sometimes, especially after BM...what I do is walk around with him for a while and then I lay him down to be changed...when I pick him up again he usually gives me a nice big burp...sometimes even 2...just take it easy andbe confident in what you're doing...everything will regulate itself...and no it doesn't seem like your daughter is colicky at all!

I would think it's ok if she doesn't burp everytime. I burp ds & he spits up most of the time anyway. I also read that the spit up is not really as much as you think so you don't have to worry about her not being nourished.
As far as the smiling, I think the average age is 4-6 weeks for a purposeful smile. Before that, it's probably just gas causing the smile.
Also, colic is when the baby screams for a few hours without being consoled & it happens a few days a week.
Don't worry, I'm sure you're doing fine

Re: why won't my baby burp??
We get good results with a nice, high over the shoulder burp. The sitting burp style didn't work for us.
Also, about your long BFing sessions, I had the same problem. Don't let DD use you for a pacifier. My lactation specialist told me that she probably isn't actively feeding and to take her off when she does that. Try switching actively back and forth and see if that helps.

Ugggh it used to take me just as long too. And I would burp in between feedings which made feedings take much longer. I eventually stopped that and only burped after the feeding was done.
The doctor used to say that it's ok if they didn't burp sometimes.
Do you think she is colicky? If she was colicky she would cry non stop for hours almost everyday. DS cried a lot in the beginning and I was starting to think he was going to be a colicky baby but at 2 months he started changing and crying less and less. I just think he was very gassy. If she doesn't burp then don't lay her down right after a feeding, try to keep her in an upright position for at least 30-45 minutes after the feeding is done.

Re: why won't my baby burp??
I never burped my kids. They burped on their own when they needed too
