Why would you put a toddler in the back of a shopping cart

Just got back from pathmark. I see this mother through out the store with her little girl (Mayyyyybe 2) standing in the back of her shopping cart. 3 seconds later I hear a sickening thud and a scream. Yup cute little girl fell out face first. All over the floor~blood.

WHY WHY OH WHY would you put a toddler unrestrained into the cart. And yet mother was yelling at the manager that the floor was slippery. Take responsibility for your actions idiot!!!!!

Re: Why would you put a toddler in the back of a shopping cart

awww.. im sure the mother was just really upset and guilty, therefore lashing out at the store was the easiest way to deal with it.. tho wrong.

I hope that little girl was all right. My nephew fell out once and luckly it was winter and had a fluffy hooded coat. My sister was terrified.

How would the floor being slippery even make a difference, moron!!!

The sad part is, she will try to sue Pathmark too!Chat Icon

Oh, that is awful!!!!!! A 2 year old is too young. You can't always "reason" with them to keep them sitting. They are curious and would want to get up and move in the cart.

I feel bad for that little girl; however, when I am by myself with my 2 girls and need to go food shopping or to Target, etc, my 2 year old (closer to 3, but have been doing this for a while) sits in the back. I won't stop doing it--she knows not to stand nor would I let her.

I think sitting in the back of the cart is fine (though dirty) but standing-absolutely not.

I always put Steven in the back. he likes to bring his puzzle and SIT there and do the puzzle.

Let's not be so judgemental...things happen in an instant. One time, Steven escaped the strap in the front part and was standing up when I turned to get something for ONE second.

I hope that girl feels betterChat Icon

Re: Why would you put a toddler in the back of a shopping cart

I let Cailen do it sometimes at 14 mts.... Sometimes its the only thing I can do to get the shopping done. I can understand why she would do it at 2 yrs old. But I keep an eye on him, I'm aware he can get hurt.

Oh my goodness if you are going to do that they MUST be sitting- no ifs ands or buts about it.
I must admit sometimes DS is so cranky from being dragged store to store but I just need to run one more errand and the only way to keep my sanity without him screaming is to let him sit in the back of the cart but SIT as soon as he decides to get up its OVER!

Unfortunately when we have more than one child, most supermarkets do not have two plus seater carts leaving us with no other option...but yes the child should have been sitting...poor thing.

Roman is 2 1/2 and he sits in the wagon when we go shopping. I see nothing wrong with it if the child is sitting and being supervised. I usually will bring something to occupy him or he just sits and stacks the food.

Exactly. When you have two, what are you supposed to do? Obviously, you should be watching your toddler and if they cannot understand to sit, you need to figure that out. But my 2 year old sits back there and I see nothing wrong with it.

Re: Why would you put a toddler in the back of a shopping cart

Yes I understand that when you have 2 you have no choice. I felt this little girl was too young to be standing in the back of a cart, mom was non-chalant throughout the store and only when the kid fall did she react and then it was to say the floor was slippery (as if to imply thats what caused the fall)

I dont doubt that any of you who put their kids in the back are not supervising them, this mother obviously wasnt. The child reached for something on a shelf and toppled over.

Yes I also know that accidents can happen in the blink of an eye and trust me my son has had accidents as well, but IMHO this was a situation that could have been avoided

I get what you're saying. But you just never know what else that woman was dealing with.

This isn't always the best way to handle things, but sometimes you just want to get done with things and not fight with the kid Chat Icon
