Re: Why would you put a toddler in the back of a shopping cart
I do it all the time, I make him sit down. Anything can happen at any time to anyone, my son tries to jump out of the front of the shopping trolley. Even when you are taking precautions, accidents happen. It sounds like it was just an accident.

Re: Why would you put a toddler in the back of a shopping cart
Maybe i'm a bad mom but I would put a toddler in the back of a cart. I wouldn't even think twice about it. I wouldn't let them jump around but to sit back there. I don't see the big deal

Re: Why would you put a toddler in the back of a shopping cart
I always thought of myself as a total neurotic, but I've been putting my 2 year old in the back of the cart for awhile now! MOST of the time he sits nicely, so it's no trouble.
Thing is, you have to watch the kid every second, literally. One day DH took DS to Lowes, put him in the back of the cart. DH turned around to look at some stuff, suddenly heard a sound from behind him.... as he turns around to look, DS is standing and lunging head-first out of the cart. Luckily DH has good reflexes and caught him as he fell out!! But it shows you cannot turn around for a second!!!

As the mommy of 2 (DD1 is 2 1/2 and DD2 is 14 months) - When I have to take the 2 of them food shopping I put DD1 in the back of the cart - she has to sit of course...

Re: Why would you put a toddler in the back of a shopping cart
What drives me crazy is when parents put the infant seat in the front of the shopping cart(the seat part) by hooking it over that little dip in the carseat....I keep getting visions of someone bumping the cart and the carseat going flying....why restrain your baby in a carseat and then leave them unrestrained in the cart?? Soooo dangerous and it seems like everyone I see with an infant has them like this in the shopping cart.

Re: Why would you put a toddler in the back of a shopping cart
I used to think I was a neurotic mommy, but I'm starting to see I'm more laidback than I realized!
I let Alex in the back of the shopping cart, and (gasp) sometimes she even stands BUT, I always make sure I'm going VERY slowly and have a close eye on her.

accidents happen... When I take all 3 into a store, the baby sits in the seat part and the middle goes in the shopping cart... I make sure she is sitting, but accidents happen.

Some people just don't think! That poor baby is now paying for having a brainless mother!
I guess I don't think either and am brainless. It must be hard being a perfect mom like yourself.

Poor baby but like you said...that's on the mom responsibility-wise...not the store manager. Bad decision. I can't even imagine the chill that went through everyone to hear and see that.

I do this sometimes too. Mostly my middle one walks (she's 4) but sometimes, for my own sanity, she goes in the back. And she must sit - bc she's not a toddler anymore, she listens 99.9% of the time. I cannot imagine my 2 year old sitting nice in the back yet. I was in Trader Joes the other day and a woman on line in front of me had what I judged to a child around 2 in the back of the cart. He was not listening at all and kept standing up. It was totally an accident waiting to happen, I was cringing watching him. Then she was trying to get him to move aside for the packages - I was thinking "just put him in the front!!!" Of course I'd never say anything but, as a parent of 3 kids who have been or are that age, I didn't get reasoning at all for putting him there.

Re: Why would you put a toddler in the back of a shopping cart
I just came back from Stop and Shop and TRader Joe's. On each cart, it CLEARLY warns not to put children in the cart so legally the woman would not have a case.
However, as a mom of two the same age, I can't necessarily fault her. I was never able to master pushing the double stroller and pulling the grocery cart behind me. Only one child fits in the seat of the cart...I would only do it if I had to and I'd try to keep my eyes on them at all times but I do agree accidents happen.

Re: Why would you put a toddler in the back of a shopping cart
I don't really see anything wrong with putting them in the back as long as they are sitting and are supervised.
I always put DS in the front and strap him in because I know my son is not one to sit still. Plus I know that if he were in the back he'd just throw all the groceries out of the cart so he needs to be in the front...

Re: Why would you put a toddler in the back of a shopping cart
Stuff happens. I am sure all of us have made bad decisions at one time or another regarding our child and we will probably continue to do so until they are out of the house.
Motherhood is all about trial and error. Heck, my daughter dove off of her highchair recently - it was my fault for not strapping her in, thankfully she was OK. You live and you learn.

Yes accidents happen, but if I can prevent them I will, I would never put my kids in the front part of the shopping cart, thats just asking for trouble, anything can happen.

Are you kidding me? Sometimes I have a hard time getting the seat off the wagon I doubt someone bumping the cart would send it flying. Most of the wagons I've seen secure the seats VERY WELL.

What if the carseat was in the bottom of the wagon? It's not restrained. Is a bag of frozen peas gonna jump up and give them frostbite?

What do you propose be done? How do parents go shopping?

Actually our pediatrician said to never put the infant seat on that front part b/c he's seen a number of injuries from the seat falling off. He said to only put it in the big part of the basket, which leaves very little room for shopping.
I used to push the Snap N Go ahead of me and pull a shopping cart behind me. Same with the double stroller.

I'm pretty sure she means in the top of the cart. I wouldn't say it drives me crazy when I see people do it but it makes me nervous as heck for the baby. They can so easily do a header onto the tile floor if the cart is bumped. Many times I've piled groceries around an infant seat in the back. I never mastered the cart/stroller thing. Cathy, I'm impressed you can do it with a double stroller!

I always put Steven in the back. he likes to bring his puzzle and SIT there and do the puzzle.
Let's not be so judgemental...things happen in an instant. One time, Steven escaped the strap in the front part and was standing up when I turned to get something for ONE second.
I hope that girl feels better
Amber does too. She wants to SIT in the back and play with her dolls. It's the only way I can get her through a shopping experience. She freaks in the front (then again, she's four).

I feel bad for that little girl; however, when I am by myself with my 2 girls and need to go food shopping or to Target, etc, my 2 year old (closer to 3, but have been doing this for a while) sits in the back. I won't stop doing it--she knows not to stand nor would I let her.
Same here with Nate.... I prefer to go grocery shopping and to Target without them, but I have to take them I have no choice. Nate knows he has to sit down with is back against the back of the cart.

Same thing happened here- strapped in and suddenly I turn my back and she is unstrapped and standing up in the front! Thank God nothing happened! Poor little girl

I put my DD in the bottom part when I am running in to Target or someplace like that. However I NEVER let her stand and if she isn't listening, I take her out and make her walk.
