Winthrop Hospital Maternity?

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone can tell me about their recent experiences at winthrop for maternity?

I had my last child at north shore university hospital and loved the way things were handled there...(person with the bracelet could stay 24 hours a day with me, baby roomed in 24/7, and rooms were comfortable).

I just found out I am pregnant, but I have a different insurance this time so I can't go my old doctor and am considering one who practices at winthrop.

So anyways, please, any info about the rules and regulations there and the way they do things in general would be much appreciated. Also if anyone has pictures of there room in maternity or other areas of maternity, I would LOVE to see them!!

I delivered at Winthrop 2 years ago and had a great experience. Since there weren't a lot of babies I had a private room. It was your standard hospital room but very big. Was not pressured to breast feed or have my daughter stay with me all night. Very liberal with who visits, was not strict at all. Around 4:00 they came around with a dessert cart.
The only thing that really sucked was the parking.

I delivered there in 2012, thankfully was able to get a private room w/ own bathroom. It is not like LIJ though... those look like hotel rooms! The only negative experience I had was with a nurse who was not so nice while I was in triage, but my delivery nurse was great. Also I formula fed and one of the nurses did make a comment that they weren't made of money when I asked for more formula, but she did give it to me. At the time they also brought my DS to the nursery whenever asked. Now I am not sure if their policies changed since I have read some stories on here from other ladies who have delivered there after me, but I will be delivering there again this summer, mainly because I like my doctor and decided not to switch from him.

I delivered at Winthrop in Feb. I had a good experience. I had a private room that was really big. I dont know how I got it, I think my OBGYN told them to give it to me. One of the nurses took my IV out and tried to put it back and she blew up my hand...it was double the normal size. I was really pissed about that. I tried to breastfeed but it did not work out. The nurses kind of frowned on me for that. They were REALLY stingy with the formula (sent me home with two little two oz bottles. Thankfully I had formula at home!).

Mind you, that is based on people's votes not just medical professionals. I think it says a lot when patients think highly of the hospital they've used

I delivered there in Sept 2013. It was a busy night and nobody had private rooms. Everyone was doubled up and i overheard someone say that there were poor ppl in the hallway waiting. The rooms are big for one, but tight for 2. I hated sharing a bathroom right after delivering. It is so uncomfortable, and messy. I also felt like if any visitors came they would be very cramped. At night my roommate had her child go to the nursery. I wasnt planning on doing it but she kept saying how she wanted to rest before going home. How would she do that with my lil one crying? So i let him go too. I also hated that bc there wasnt any room my DH couldnt stay with me overnight. He would have had to sleep in a chair sitting up. Not worth it -- so he left and came back.
The staff were all very nice. I didnt have any problems and I formula fed. They even helped us try different nipples for the bottle to help him latch.

Edited to add -- I was in a room WITHOUT a shower as welll

I delivered there in. 2013 and had a great experience. The nurses were great. I formula fed and had no problem. I even sent ds to the nursery both nights with no problem. I'm delivering there in July again.

DH could stay 24 hours. When I was there in the summer, they didn't have any set "visiting hours".
The rooms are ok. Nothing fancy. They were supposed to renovate, but I was told they did a couple of rooms and stopped.
If they are very crowded, you might get a room without a shower. Nurses told me those didn't exist. They do. I had one and the bathroom was tiny. Luckily, I wasn't doubled up, but most rooms were.

I'm pregnant, due in June. High-risk and did a lot of research; their NICU is supposed to be fantastic- if you end up needing it. Their Maternal Fetal Medicine team is also wonderful.. Goodluck to you!

I gave birth in December 2013, 6 weeks early. Actually DD was born on New Years eve, so that's where we rang in the new year. The labor and delivery rooms are gorgeous and huge. I was high risk so they actually had me spend two days down there before moving to a regular maternity room. The nurses down there were also awesome. I got moved to a double maternity room and was some the first night but got a roommate the second night. Apparently they were completely full and there were no private rooms available. The nurses were all awesome. I exclusively breastfed but due to my preeclampsia I couldn't nurse right away so I pumped. The nurses all helped me pump and since DD was in the nicu they kept collecting my milk and bringing it over for me (I had a csection and couldn't move well).

DD was in the nicu for 6 weeks. The nurses there are AMAZING. they really helped DH and I navigate nicu life and put our minds at ease. They were fantastic with us visiting and really letting us do as we pleased with DD (within reason of course). I hated the fact that DD was there for so long but thank god she was. She couldn't have been in better hands.

I had a great experience there when I gave birth to my dd in 2013. Drs and nurses were wonderful. I had my own room with bathroom & shower- nothing fancy but it is a hospital! The room was spacious and my DH had a bed to sleep. The food is actually very good- you get to choose from a menu & they brought my DH food too. The dessert cart every afternoon is a nice treat!
The nurses were very helpful w/ assisting me w/ breastfeeding. I was able to keep the baby w/ me but if you want you can have baby go to the nursery.
The visiting hours are pretty flexible.

I delivered at Winthrop in 2012 and NSUH in 2014. I had a much better experience at North Shore.

Winthrop- my son was in NICU. I had had a c/s and couldn't walk down to see him. So I had to wait for someone to wheel me down. They constantly forgot about me. I was trying to bf so I told them I needed to get down there every 3 hours. I would call 1/2 an hour in advance and they would still forget about me. I did have my own room (although it was a double room) I stayed myself the entire time. They offered some help bf-ing but made you feel really crappy if you couldn't.

North Shore the staff was much friendlier and more responsive. Overall a better experience and much nicer hospital.
