So my friend just had a baby and said they force you to keep the baby in the room with you all night...I think whether you are breastfeeding or not.
I did not FB and had a baby there almost 15 mos ago - they gladly kept DD in the nursery at night so I could get some sleep.
New policy apparently - they make you keep the babies. How are new mom's supposed to get rest? My friend had a c-section and couldn't get up out of bed so had the baby literally sleep on her all night.
I just think this is a terrible new rule...if a new mom wants her rest that is the best time to get it.
Just wondering if anyone who recently delivered there had this same experience?

I had my baby there 14 months ago and they kept her in the nursery at night, which is great. I was hoping this time to do the same thing. I didn't know they changed their policy. I was hoping to get some rest.

apparently they told my friend this is their new policy as of this week.
But I know someone else who had a baby there in August and they gave her a hard time about it as well.
It was not even an option for my friend...she had to keep the baby and she was EXHAUSTED and in pain from her section.

yea, they shouldn't do that especially after a C-section.

my son was also born there 16 months ago and i sent him to the nursery every night... thats odd Chat Icon

honestly though, its not like you can get great sleep anyway. with them coming in every 3-4 hours to check temp/vitals and with the compression cuffs on your legs etc, there is no sound sleep to be had.

i couldnt even fathom that though. i had a csection and there is no way i could have done it.

um wowChat Icon Im having my Chat Icon at winthrop in February and I know im having a c section. My last c section recovery WAS TERRIBLE. I was in so much pain i could barely move. I dont see how they expect a mother in tons of pain to care for her child the entire night if they need restChat Icon

Yes, My DD was born September 2. I was the only one that brought my DD back to the nursery at night and asked one of the nurses why. She told me that there was a push to keep all babies with their moms because in Mid Sept. it would be policy. Apparently the thought is that it will better prepare new moms for when they go home.

The first night there I had to share a room, after giving birth at 10:01pm, being brought to the room at 1:30am, then my roommate having her baby up crying all night and not getting any sleep, I do not know how this is fair to new moms, especially ones that go through hard labor/deliveries. The second night I got my private room, and was able to bring my DD to the nursery and got some good sleep. I was so thankful for it. This policy is going to be very hard on moms that are in double rooms.

I've heard this. They said something about bonding etc.
They are going to HATE ME as a patient.
Aren't there patient rights?? Shouldn't they do what a mom says/wants???
My other 2 sons were in the nursery every night and we bonded just fine.

that is such crap! I remember being with DS all day not knowing what I should be doing..at least at night I would send the baby to the nursery where I knew he would be fine and I could rest up for the next crazy day.

Re: Wintrhop ladies

I'm having my 3rd there in March.

Am I the only one who doesn't really care if the baby is with me all night? I mean, how much "rest" do you really get? I remember it being such a pain to bring the baby to the nursery, to have the nurses in every hour or so, etc.

I really don't have an issue with it per say (yet to go through L&D) but I'm just worried about what if I have a C and I can't really move much or reach out to my baby. And if I share a room, what if I have a screamer Chat Icon

This is more of my issue. I DID have a c section and my recovery was very tough and I also developed a fever after having my Chat Icon too. Im more concerned about this honestly.

I'm sure there are exceptions.. I mean its a hospital.. the mom recouperating and healing properly is also a vital part of caring for the baby. I honestly doubt the rule is black and white. I'm going to my doc week, I'll be sure to ask.

wow that's crazy! i delivered there in July and i was only in the hospital for one night but i had them take my baby to the nursery so i could get some rest. they never even questioned it. but, in reality, i didnt get to rest at all between them bringing me the baby every 2 hours to breastfeed and the nurses coming in to check my temp/blood pressure. i couldn't wait to get home to actually rest in my bed.

ETA: if they're really so concerned about preparing the mothers by keeping the babies in the rooms, they should provide a cot for the fathers and let them stay overnight too.

Re: Wintrhop ladies

This sounds totally insane to me! I had a c section with DD and there would be no way that I could have hadher with me all night. I needed someone to physically hand her to me! I have a doctor appointment next week and will be sure to ask. I too will be having a c section again there in February and I can't imagine this! This might make me change my mind about what hospital I deliver at (if that's an option for my OB)

Re: Wintrhop ladies

Just took this off Winthrop's Website

MODIFIED ROOMING-IN - Early and prolonged contact between you and your baby is provided with this program. Your baby will remain in your room from 9:30 am - 6 pm, and again from 8:30 pm until approximately 11 pm. This will enable your newborn to get to know you, see you, respond to your voice and touch, and begin developing feeding and waking patterns. During the day shift, the same nurse will care for you and your baby. This will facilitate learning about your care, as well as the care of your newborn. At night (generally after 10 pm) babies are taken to the Nursery and will be returned to the mothers' rooms during feeding times. Remember, never leave your baby alone or unsupervised in your room.

The New Life Center also offers 24-hour Rooming-In, if a private room is available or in a semi-private room with your roommate's approval.

This can't be. It just doesn't sound right.

The first night after a c-section you have those pump things on your legs to keep the circulation going because you physically cannot move. How are you supposed to do a diaper change at feeding time? It's physically impossible. I'd be calling the nurse in every time the baby woke up to either hand the baby to me, or do the diaper change so what's the point?

I wouldn't go by what the website says either because websites like this are rarely updated with the most current info. If it's true that this is a recent policy change, I wouldn't expect it to be on the site yet.

Well this had me totally stressed and thinking about changing hospitals Chat Icon so I called. The guy on the phone from the maternity ward (post-partum) said that is not the policy. Babies can be sent to the nursery at night.

But I'm going to keep double-checking between now and my EDD. Chat Icon

I am going to call also (not today) - will call tomorrow to see if I can get someone else on the phone. But it doesn't sound possible to me at all. Why even bother staying in the hospital? You might as well go home!

Yikes..I know with my experience I went into the hospital at 3am and had DD at 1pm..I had not slept for over 24 hours. After not sleeping and 3 hours of pushing there was no way I'd be able to function that night. I did not have a c-section, but my roommate did, and she could not even get out of bed the first day. Kinda seems odd that they would allow this.

Re: Wintrhop ladies

I didn't have this. DD was born in November and they brought her to me at 12, 3, and 6 for feedings.

eta: I had a c-section and looked like a science experiment the first night. I had tubes and needles coming out of everywhere and literally couldn't walk. This policy makes no sense, especially in a hospital where 50% of the patients have sections... I'd get someone on the phone or talk to your OB.
