Well this had me totally stressed and thinking about changing hospitals  so I called. The guy on the phone from the maternity ward (post-partum) said that is not the policy. Babies can be sent to the nursery at night.
But I'm going to keep double-checking between now and my EDD.
thanks for doing that and posting it! i'm going to be going there anytime in the next week or so to deliver, so was starting to get concerned reading this thread..
hopefully it's a somewhat 'loose' policy that they're flexible with

I had my baby there 2 weeks ago - September 2 - and I can promise you that's not the case.
They do leave the baby in the room with you, but any time you push the call button and ask for her to be taken to the nursery, a nurse shows up in about 1 minute and whisks her away. My nurse actually encouraged me to do it, because I hadn't slept in two days. No guilt, no asking me why I didn't want her there. And I was BF'ing. I saw other moms on the floor formula feeding and they had their babies in the nursery for the entire night - at least 6 or 7 hours.

I'm scheduled on Monday for a c-section so I can comfirm next week... But today at my appointment my doctor told me about this and said it is their new policy as of a few days ago.. They also extended visiting hours by starting at 1 instead of 2.

exactly what I said in my OP...it's a new policy as of just days ago. My friend is still in...going home today and they did not allow her to send the baby to the nursery any night. She is EXHAUSTED.
Also I disagree about not getting any rest at night...I was not BF and only remember someone coming in once to check on me...I slept like a baby my 1st night so that's why I have such issues with this.

I had a baby there almost 5 months ago and this is semi true. They really do push you to keep the baby, but you can insist they take the baby at night and bring her/him to you for feedings. I was/am breastfeeding, but the second night there I really needed to sleep and although the nurses sort of gave me a hard time they did take her and I got her for feedings.

Lucky you b/c I think you just missed it.
My friend had her baby this past Wednesday - they told her the policy started on Tuesday. She cried and begged and they would not take the baby. She said she begged her dr. to discharge her early b/c she felt like she was in prision - she said they didn't help her with much. Her dr. let her go home 1 day early.
This change does not make me happy. My friend is on the quiet side though so I do not think she flipped out and yelled and cried at the nurses like I would do...I think she just took it as it's the new rule and I have no choice.
Curious to hear from those of you due soon who are delivering there...please report back!

with my last pregnancy I had some complications and after I gave birth I was on a catheter & an IV drip for sky high blood pressure. That night my DS was in the nursery. You mean to tell me that now the baby will be in my room with that situation? I am delivering my next baby in March and this is concerning to me. Is it different if you had complications? I can't see with my last situation me having DS in my room that first night.
If this is the case what do we do constantly buzz a nurse for help?

wow, so if the mother does not feel up to caring for the baby, she cannot have the nursery take them at all?
DC#1 was born at winthrop & I loved it there but if this is the new policy, I will be switching hospitals with DC#2.

ugh that is terrible news!
They should be charging our insurance companies less if we don't get any use of a nursery! Honestly this is just the craziest thing I've ever heard. I delivered at almost 11pm...they didn't get me in a room until close to 2am...I could not even imagine having my DD in my room that 1st night...or the next night either. You are so exhausted from what you go through...I just can't even believe they would think this is a good idea.

I just delivered at North Shore in August and this is not their policy at all. They gladly took babies back to the nursery at night so that moms could rest....

I just delivered at North Shore in August and this is not their policy at all. They gladly took babies back to the nursery at night so that moms could rest....
My SIL is in NS as we speak and she sends the baby to the nursery, as well...definitely need some clarity on the situation in the maternity ward at Winthrop--this might mean changing doctors so that I can deliver at a different hospital

It wouldn't bother me at all if I had to keep the baby with me. I actually would have loved to keep my son with me when he was born, but I had a roommate and I read on their website that you can't keep them overnight if you have a roommate. So I had him in my room every second that I could! And anxiously awaited for the nurses to bring him to me for feedings every 3 hours!
That being said, I had a smooth, easy vaginal delivery and had no problem taking care of him. Had I had a C-section, or a really rough vaginal delivery, I couldn't have done it. And I don't think it is safe for the baby or the mother if this truly is the new policy.
What I don't understand at all is why there is such varying information actually coming from Winthrop. People are calling the hospital and being told this is not policy, then an actual nurse from the hospital comes on and says it IS policy. I love Winthrop, but what in the world is going on over there? What's with the lack of communication??

I am trying not to get upset about this since I am not due until February, but if it really is the policy, then I am going to switch doctors so I can deliver at a different hospital.
I had DD at winthrop 2.5 yrs ago and LOVED it! If this truly is a new policy, I don't even see the point of having a nursery. If the baby is never there, then why have it? Why even stay at the hospital? You might as well go home. I think that this is an awful blow to what was a fabulous hospital for givign birth.

Stony Brook told me this too. It is not a policy per se, just that they are strongly encouraging rooming in. I will say there were only 2 babies in the nursery when I was there visiting. I'm sure Winthrop is the same. Encouraging, not mandating.

As a soon to be first time mom due in Feb. I probably have irrational fears about this. I can't even imagine how delivery and giving birth actually feels like or the process or the hospital setting as I've never even been in the hospital (Maybe I will feel better after a hospital tour?)
Here are my fears
1. The baby stays in my room, I fall asleep, someone steals the baby. I guess I feel like if I have the baby its my responsibility where if the baby is in the nursery its someone else's responsibility?
2. I can't get up after delivery, maybe have C Section, don't feel good, so I can't get up often to get baby, put back baby etc so I end up holding the baby all night, fall asleep doing so and he drops to the ground.
If this is the case though, I'm thinking well I am up all night now peeing anyway. If i'm up all night taking care of the baby alone, that when my family and friends comes to visit I will just sleep all day while they care for the baby during the day. Also, a part of me wonders if I will just want my baby nearby constantly anyway regardless of how I feel since I am so excited about it..but then I imagine how I am going to feel, and I thought I'd get some rest before going home.
If you have vaginal how long are you in hospital compared to c-section?
Even though you are not in nursery I'd imagine there is a nurse assigned to you and baby the entire time right?

If you have vaginal how long are you in hospital compared to c-section?
Even though you are not in nursery I'd imagine there is a nurse assigned to you and baby the entire time right?
There is a tag around the baby's ankle so no worries - if someone tries to steal your baby they will not get far!
Vaginal births you spend 2 nights in the hospital vs I believe 4 nights for a c-section.
For vaginal though - I imagine it's the same with c-section...it can almost seem like 1 night if you deliver late at night. I had DD at almost 11pm...didn't get up to a room until 2am but that still counted as 1 night. I would have loved for that not to count and been there another night. Some people want to rush home - well maybe now with this new policy I will but otherwise I think it's nice being in a hospital with nurses there caring for you and baby.
Yes there is always a nurse assigned to you...they are not always so helpful. I had to push the call button 3x for some motrin my first night. They were super busy though - the maternity ward was full.

My friend's sister had her baby on Friday, and I specifically asked her about the rooming in.. they "encourage" you to keep the baby with you, for bonding, skin to skin and getting familiar etc.. but if you want to sleep or you are tired, they take the munchkin away.
Its up to you, and how you feel.. I haven't been there but from what I gathered with the other person's experience its not a mandatory policy.

OK i just want to make sure I have this since there are so many conflicting responses!
SO I'm gathering that...
When I have my baby, they are going to bring baby to my room and not take him away at all UNLESS I specifically request them to. And when I do, I should not have a problem. They will happily take my request.
