Why should they be fired? Maybe I'm missing something.
Because from what I heard yesterday, there was a highly publicized case in their area, where a college student died from the same thing as part of a hazing situation. They work in radio - they should be aware of what is going on enough to know this was a dangerous stunt.

It is tragic and shame on the radio station...this is actually something that can be found quite easily on the web how it's a danger to a person's health. They should have researched it before they ever made this a contest.
I first heard about it after doing some research on eating disorders. Your body can not absorb it and it can actually deplete (sp) your body of essential salts needed to function. People who binge on water to make themselves feel "full" can wind up killing themselves.

i dunno-- i am probably the odd man out on htis one-- but IMO- i think it was foolish on her part... 2 gallons of water in that short period of time without going to the bathroom is just not smart-- for all things-- a nintendo game system. everyone knows a healthy water intake is 6-8 8oz glasses a day-- which is spaced out throughout HOURS of time.
yes I agree it is sad- very sad, and I feel badd for her children and family, that this was totally a preventable incident-- it was stupid on the part of the radio station as well..., however all due respect, she should have been clued in when she didnt feel good to stop.

All I want to know is where was the station's Legal Department? Shouldn't their lawyers have nixed this stunt?? They are the ones who should be fired as well.
It was very poor judgement on both the station's part and the woman, especially since people called in about water intoxification.

Very sad story.
We did the math in the office yesterday. She drank a total of 2 gallons which is 256 fluid oz. and each bottle was drank in 2 minutes and then a 10 minute break. So we divided 256 by 12 and came up with that she drank an average of 21 oz per minute. (A dasani bottle is 16 oz.)
Thats ALOT!
