According to wikipedia, citing estimates from July 2007, there are currently 302,419,072 people living in the United States. If half are female, and each of those females were to produce 17 children like the woman in this story, there would be no less than 2,872,981,184, almost 3 BILLION, people living in this country. I do not think that the Earth can support all these people and that is scary to me. That's all I'm saying.
I understand what your saying. Its more of a worse case scenario.
While thats a scary thought, I highly doubt that half the women in the US are really gunning for 17 children each. A lot of people are scared of having 2 kids, so although the Duggars seem excessive, I dont see a "Duggar Trend".
Plus they are from a small fundamentalist Christian group that advocates having many children. Its not a mainstream branch of Christianity, therefore not many people know of it
Also, they are a totally self-sufficient family, no goverment aid at all. If Mrs. Duggar can handle 17 kids and a husband, then more power to her

In some ways i am kind of jealous. Mainly because DH and I have not been able to have any children and I would have loved having lots of kids!!!
I jsut recently watched the episode of them building their house. It was amazing......

This was what struck me most. I cannot imagine being pregnant for so much of my life!

just my honest opinion---but i think it's terrible. i agree about overpopulation. just because you can have 17 children, doesn't mean you should.
i watched a special on them last week and i actually got angry the more i learned about them. it was the first emotion i felt.
then i thought about how they should be on "what not to wear". 
the poor kids though....i feel like they don't get to the "outside" world much. that's how the special made it seem

Well those kids will never be at a loss for someone to play with!
I think it's very nice that they have all these kids and can live w/o receiving public assistance, but I wonder if the kids are getting all the attention they really need.
My DH comes from a fairly large family. He is one of seven kids and I can't help but wonder, seeing how some of his siblings are whether or not they really had enough one on one time with their parents.
His dad had to work A LOT to support the family so he missed out on ball games, dances, recitals, etc.
Naturally, I'm glad they had my husband but in the end I wonder if large families are really for the best.

I watched them on tv...I am so much more concerned about our future while watching My Super Sweet 16. Those Dugger kids are well mannered, helpful, and loving. The older kids do help, but I bet they like to do so. I was the oldest of 7, I loved holding and feeding babies...they are your siblings and you just loved them, no resentment.
I think they are raising a really great bunch of young, hardworking family men.
Super Sweet 16 is so much more alarming to me. How are those kids going to survive in the world? Crying on TV because your car is the wrong color?

The show on TLC is jaw-dropping. Every one of those kids is very well behaved. Nobody speaks out of line. Neither of the parents raise their voice- they simply KNOW the secret to raising wonderful well-mannered kids. They focus alot on prayer and music. I think they even wrote a book on parenting..

I saw the show where the traveled together on the west coast. What an unbelievable feat and an amazing undertaking! Watching them go grocery shopping/do laundry/shop was just  I give them a lot of credit.
More power to them and god bless that woman for being pregnant for a quarter of her life.

I am FASCINATED with the Duggar family. I watch all of their specials and wish them the best. It's amazing what they're able to do (build their own house, homeschool all of the kids, feed so many people) and it's a testament to the human spirit and the value of family and community.
Now, do I think EVERY couple should have 17 children? Heck no!

AMEN  Who are we to judge them. I too though oh my maybe you should close up shop, but after watching their specials I have a whole new appreciation for them. Yes their clothing is odd and old fashion, but they are not in debt, they have a new large home they mostly built, they are well mannered(?), and do not look like any of them are starving or mad about life. How many of us can say the same? More power to them! Just FYI also they have very strong religious beliefs that dictate there forms of BC
