Women with tattoos - first impressions. [Poll]
Whenever this subject comes up at work, this girl I work with says "My husband thinks they're trashy on women." Although I know better than to enter into this conversation with her, for various reasons I'm not going to mention, I was a little taken aback.
I don't think I've ever heard that from a man. If anything, I've heard the opposite - that it's sexy. I'm not saying all tattoos, I'm saying women with tattoos. I mean, why the double standard? Because they are supposed to be a masculine thing, and it's just an antequated idea?
So, for the sake of anonymity I posted a poll. You see a woman with a tattoo. Anywhere - lower back, neck, shoulder, arm... What is your first impression?
(forgive the poll choices if your choice isn't there - I honestly don't know what to expect on anticipated responses)

I think tattoos on women are nice on occasion. Some are really pretty, but some are excessive. I think the same about men with tattoos. It depends on the person, the tattoo, and the amount.

i'm too chicken to get one.
but i guess to each their own. there are some areas that when i see them---i won't lie--i think "ohhh---eww that just looks a bit much" but i guess its because my parents both were sooooo anti-tattoo that they put it into my head that tattoos on women were bad--especially in certain areas. unfortunately it kind of stuck in my head

Can be beautiful if tastefully done.
I know a few guys that feel the way your co-worker's DH does. He's not the only one and certainly not the first time I'm hearing it. They think they are trashy are women - not sexy at all.
I say whatever - they are entitled to their opinion too.

Re: Women with tattoos - first impressions. [Poll]
From men, I've heard both: "I think they are sexy" and "I think they are trashy". I guess it depends on the person. I'm not a fan of tattoos in general myself - they are not for me and I can't see myself ever getting them. On others - hmm, I never really thought about it much - when I see someone with a tattoo it doesn't even cross my mind. I don't think it is a big deal - I mean, ones that really stick out like sleeves and such tend to get noticed, for obvious reasons, more but to each their own - doesn't bother me and doesn't spark my interest.
ETA: I love the Rick-Roll reference in the poll, btw!

I had to get in on that action.

I'm glad you responded, I was interested in the male point of view.
See, I would expect that kind of response from a reasonable person - the whole "it depends" answer. I suppose I was surprised at the sweeping statement more than anything else.
There are so many variables, reasons, types... why lump all women together into the 'trashy' category?

I don't care either way.
I DO admit that I when I see young women walking around with the tribal/Asian lettered *tramp stamps*- I just feel that that type of tat and "area" are SO over done.
So rather than hate on the women WITH tats, I guess I just hate on the types of tats

Re: Women with tattoos - first impressions. [Poll]
To each, their own.
My husband doesn't love them but for that matter it didn't stop him from marrying me.
I think you're going to find people on both sides of the issue, I've heard tattoos on women referred to as beautiful work of art and expression and others say it's a "tramp stamp".
Why? I have no clue. But I think it's like anything, there are people who like 'em and those that don't.
In the end, it's cetainly not worth anyone getting their panties in a bunch over.

Re: Women with tattoos - first impressions. [Poll]
Well coming from someone who is tattooed WAY beyond what people think, I have to say that I've gotten looks and comments.
Back in the day when I was on a date and the guy found out I was tattooed he told me that he couldn't date me and was taking me home
Honestly I think its pathetic when people judge you on your tattoos or how tattooed you are.
It's a personal expression and that doesn't always mean that you'll agree with that expression.
There are certain tattoos that I but it doesn't mean that I think any less of the person.

The first thing I think when I see someone who has lots of tatoos is- what will those look like in 20/30/40 years when you get wrinkles?

Re: Women with tattoos - first impressions. [Poll]
I've heard both opinions (trashy/sexy) as well. I think it's an individual preference just like preferring long hair over short - all depends on the person.
My very first impression is "ouch" followed by the awe that someone could commit artwork on themselves for a lifetime. They aren't for me personally.
For other people, I think it depends on the woman, where it is & what it is. For me no one set rule as in the lower back is a tramp stamp either. How big, how small all comes into play. I'm more apt to judge someone's personality than I am a tatoo or clothing.
The only thing that irks me is having a tatooed person annoyed by someone looking at their tatoo. You get a work of art on a visible part of your body, expect people to look. If you want it "just for you" pick a covered spot.
A very good friend of my family is a tatoo artist. He has a chip on his shoulder (an actual picture of a potato chip) and the chinese symbol for beef with broccoli. It's his version of his art - sarcastic as he is. I don't think his version is "sexy" but to each his or her own.

rick roll, aside...... I actually have those wings. They are not as long, but only because I have another tattoo in the way.
I usually only at someone when the tattoos are poorly inked or when it seems like they have ink just to have ink, KWIM?

I have the "tramp stamp" way before everyone and their mother had it done. I like tattoos, I PERSONALLY dont like sleeves on woman, to each his own. I think if its something YOU (you as anyone but me) then Rock on. I do however find a man who is covered with Tats VERY hot. Amazing since my DH has none.

Good thing all those women aren't trying to please her husband. I don't get the double standard either.
Male or female, I make no judgements. I often wonder what personal meaning it has to him/her.

See, it's that kind of very strong opinion that I just don't get. I mean, of all the things to be offended by, why such a strong reaction that forced him to end the date? And without even knowing what they were? I don't get it.
I also think about that - what tattoos will look like decades from now. Which is why I chose my upper back. I figure that's not going to change THAT much, like a boob would.

My DH is not a fan of them on women. Personally whatever you feel like doing, but they would never be a turn on for me seeing them on men.
I guess I am apathetic.

Its so funny you should mention this. I was on the subway last week and this man was completely tatooed. He was bald and had this huge tatoo on his head. I was staring at it. It was really beautiful. It seemed to be a Mayan sun around his entire head. Then when he looked up, he had two eyes on his next. They startled me- and I was staring at him. I apologized for staring, and told him his tatoos were beautiful, but I didn't expect to see those eyes. He was very nice. He just smiled at me.

I don't like sleeves on ANYONE. male or female.
I've seen both men and women with tats that I like and tats this I didn't
I will say though, that to ME, a tat is never an "elegant" accessory when wearing a gown. I don't like seeing them in that situation.
again, this is MY opinion. they look good with jeans or a bikini on the beach. not at a black tie function.
eta: after working for a surgeon for many years and knowing the dangers of getting Hep C...I am also leery of them in general.

Re: Women with tattoos - first impressions. [Poll]
I have a few tattoos myself - going against the grain of what a "nice Jewish girl" should do. That being said, one of mine had been placed smack dab between my shoulderblades. I do agree with Ophelia (and it may even shock her ) that I don't like the way it looks when I am all dolled up for a black tie function. I do like my tattoo, I just wish I would have had it placed elsewhere so as not to draw attention to it. All of my other tattoos are discreetly placed. Since I no longer wear low-rise jeans (I think they look stupid on a 37 year old), I don't give my "tramp stamp" a second thought.
This tattoo made wedding dress shopping a chore. So much so, that I was only able to try on a total of three dresses that covered it. I was lucky when I found my dress. Had I NOT found it, I would have ended up with a custom made dress and a nightmare of a wedding experience: My dress: The cover-up:
