Working in the summer...WWYD
I am a teacher and have an option to work in the summer. I have every year and have never had off a summer in the 12 years I have been working. DS is going to be 4 in September. In the past, he has gone to his daycare - however next year he will not be going and will be going to a camp. My hours at the school would be 8-1 and it would be 6 weeks. It is almost $6000 gross for the six weeks which, when I did the math from last summer is a little more than $4000 net. Than I would have to pay for DS camp which would be about $2000 (and he would only be going to camp for the 6 weeks I work from 8-2). In all honesty, I don't NEED the money but I really do enjoy working. The summer has always been great for me b/c I would get out at 1 and then pick DS up and we would go to the pool for the rest of the day. This is the FIRST time I have really NOT wanted to do it. I do have a very comfortable job in the summer and it is very easy. I work with wonderful people in the summer and ENJOY being there! My teaching assistant that I have been working with for 5 years would be sad. This is a program I started and someone would be more than happy to take it over. I was planning on working b/c I am maid of honor in a friends bridal party and was going to use the summer money for her bridal party things. I am just so unsure of what to do. I'm also not going to lie, I am a little nervous about having DS home for an entire summer just me and him (he can be a huge handful)....but I know this is my last summer working. WWYD? I would love to hear other opinions! Sorry so long!!!

Knowing its your last year teaching, I would teach this summer. Its only 6 weeks and its from 8am-1pm and you were still able to spend other summers with your son and still have fun. I say go for it!

I say work! It sounds like you love what you do and it would be fun. Besides you have the whole afternoon to spend with your son.

If you don't have a long commute, I would work, since you still get a big chunk of the day with your DS.

Re: Working in the summer...WWYD
Its funny you should say this, I have a similar set up for summer program and I always thought once I have kids I am not going to work anymore summers. But now that I have kids I kind of think why not work? If your program is easy, your will make money in the end, your ds will get to do fun things and you will still get to be with him around 1:30 I would totally go for it! good luck

Re: Working in the summer...WWYD
this is just what I would do- i am a teacher/librarian and have off for summers and would NEVER EVER work in the summer if i didn't have to! i LOVE the summer and since my kids are 3 and 5 it is so much fun to have every day open to just do whatever. it is a luxury so many people do not get to enjoy. however, i am not a real teacher so i don't have that love of being in the classroom etc. so i am not telling you what to do...just what i would do whatever you choose will be the right thing!

Re: Working in the summer...WWYD
I'm in a similar situation and decided against it. I didn't want to put dd in camp, plus she still maps from 1-3 so bu the time I would get to see her it would be like working mh regular school day. I was very tempted to teach summer school though so I can appreciate your dilemma.

Re: Working in the summer...WWYD
Look forward, when he's in 2nd, 3rd, 4th grade. He'll prob want to go to camp with his friends, even if its a 1/2 day. If you gave up your teaching job, would you be able to get it back? Would you want it back?
I say you teach, if not for this year, for future years.
