Working Moms wanting more kids
Just curious...
Those moms who work outside the home now. If you have another child (or more), will you return to work after that baby too? Or do you think that with 2+ kids you'll stay home?
I would like to think I'd be able to stay home, but I think I'd have to go back to work

Re: Working Moms wanting more kids
I will definitely be going back to work after I have my next baby. I have no desire to be a SAHM, I love my job and I know my children are in good hands (with hubby all day)

Don't know. Its up in the air. DH will deploy after #2, so him being totally gone I think I actually need to stay home. But I like working, so I may go to p/t after he deploys. Until then it'll proly be f/t, but we're not certain. We'll see. I have mixed feelings.

Re: Working Moms wanting more kids
I'm still working with 2 kids. It does get easier as they get older because daycare costs do go down.
At one point when we were considering a third, we decided I would still work. It would definitely pay because at this point Maddie is off to kindergarten so I would only pay for SCOPE for 2 kids & an infant in daycare.
I'm not but even if I were coming out even in terms of what I brought home & what I paid daycare, it still pays. I'm contributing to a 401K, where there is a company match. In addition there would be increases along the way, not to mention benefits.
If I were to leave my job, in addition to the financial stress, my DH would have to work OT - a lot of it. That means he's coming home exhausted - and coming home to me - a SAHM that needs a break. For us, that combination isn't a winning one so it isn't an option.

Re: Working Moms wanting more kids
I'm going through this right now. I'm due with #2 in a month. I had to do a cost comparison on how much I would actually bring home after day care, travel cost, etc. After I did the cost analysis - I would break even to have the stress of rushing all over and having my kids in daycare FT.
At this time I'm out on disablity, once that is over - I'm taking my FMLA and made the decision to quite my job. I hope to be able to stay how through the Summer. The only way it makes sense for me to go back is to find something in LI and for a higher salary.

Re: Working Moms wanting more kids
I went back to work 10 weeks after #2 was born. I looked forward to going back to work. I really enjoy working and have no desire to be a SAHM. I was home with Nate for a year and I always felt like something was missing.
I personally feel more inclined to be at home when they are school-aged. I think that's when kids are most influence by outside factors. Even then I would try to find something that I can do PT while they are at school.

This would be one of the main reasons I would continue as well. I also worry about what I would do/how things would be when the kids are older. If I leave the workforce I worry that I wouldn't be able to re-enter.
We go back on forth on what to do when we have baby #2 so I'm not 100% sure - either way. For now the answer is that I will probably go back to work.

Re: Working Moms wanting more kids
I responded most likely. Right now, we live in a certain lifestyle that we can only continue if I continue to work. We have a nanny so chilcare costs will not increase significantly but our overall costs will, of course, increase with a second (or third, etc) child. Also, all our healthcare is under my job. When we bought our house, DH and I decided that I would have to continue to work to be able to afford our lifestle. We both fell in love with our house and the community we live in. It is great for DS and our nanny has playdates everyday wioth the other children in our neighborhood. The commute is about an hour or less each way for both DH and I, which is what we wanted. Believe me though, I would move in a HEARTBEAT if it meant that I could be a SAHM.

Re: Working Moms wanting more kids
Absolutely-I like working, we like the life we have and feel very fortunate that we can afford a really good day care program for our child and any future children. Also, I happen to think that if you find a good program day care is really good for kids so I would want so send my child/children for at least part of the day and would work during those hours.

Re: Working Moms wanting more kids
I would continue to work. While i make a decent salary, the benefits and 401K contributions alone are important to my family. Plus I don't think I am cut out to be a SAHM. I need to be working at least PT.

Re: Working Moms wanting more kids
I would give my legs to be a SAHM- but unfortunately its not in the cards for me...
Ideally- Id go back to working PT-
However if I remain FT- I have the next best thing to being a SAHM- since my children will be able to come to work with me...

ITA.
If we were to have a third, I'd be bringing home a lot less of my post-tax salary but my health care benefits and my 403B, as well as my future pension still make the decision to work the right decision for the long haul. Yes, while they are in daycare it will be rough but that is only a few years.
Being the daughter of a single parent (my mom died in an accident), I would never feel comfortable completely quitting my career. God-forbid something happened to my DH.

Re: Working Moms wanting more kids
I would return to work, I make more than breaking even w/2 in daycare and would like to continue in my career so considering we need my salary I wouldn't stop working. I would probably look for in-home care for the first year or so though because Ryan would be in some type of school at that point and a nanny could take care of shuttling him and an infant. I think that would ease the burden on me a lot to have that in-home help.

As of right now I do have to go back to work but something might change in the next few months and (keep my fingers crossed) I may be a SAHM.

Re: Working Moms wanting more kids
I am going back and forth with this now since I just found out that I am preggo. I definitely have to work but I think I migh tneed to make a major change in my job. We have just built a new home which we are moving in to in a few weeks and I can't quite working b/c we will not be able to support our lifestyle. I am thinking of babysitting which will help in my efforts to open a daycare center which I have been looking into doing by 2009.

Re: Working Moms wanting more kids
yes, because I stayed home with Bryan until he was 18 months but I really enjoyed working. Im not thrilled with putting a really young baby in daycare because of the illness factor so we are toying with the idea of Dh staying home. We are def not in a rush though for number 2, Im fortunate to be a young mom so I dont feel the biological pressure yet.

Re: Working Moms wanting more kids
I have 2 and I returned to work. I know my kids are in good hands. My salary is higher then DH and I have the better benifits and 401K, bonus, profit sharing ect...... I doesnt make sense for my family for me to stay home. I also worry about giving up my career and the what ifs that can happen. I like being secure that I am always able to support my girls in our current lifestyle if something were to happen to DH.
