Worried....Long....Update on 3/27
I saw the info about the pet recall on Sunday. I give Rocky my cocker spaniel the Nutro Holistic wet food that was on the recall. I went onto the nutro site and the cans he had were in the recall. Now the thing is that we had bought his food in bulk around 2 weeks ago and he didn't eat it.
I didn't know about the recall then and was wondering why the heck he wasn't eating his food but was still begging for our food and trying to steal the cat's food. Around the same time I also noticed that he started drinking alot more water and urinating more and having more accidents in the house.
Now we got Rocky from a shelter and don't know his exact age but it's estimated to be between 9 and 11 years old and I've been doing some research online and his symptoms could be from either diabetes or kidney failure. We called the vet this week and he said to monitor any changes in his behavior but he didn't seem too concerned.
Rocky's been acting normal besides the excessive drinking and urination. Any advice or anyone been through something similar? He's my baby and I am so worried. I'm starting to cook for him homemade food now because I'm scared to give him anything else. TIA
UPDATE 3/22 - Well the vet just called me back with Rocky's blood results. He said that normal is from 6 thru 25 and Rocky came back at the high end of normal at 29. He wants me to bring a urine sample and he said it can be either the kidneys, dehydration or something else. Please keep praying for Rocky. The vet asked how he was acting and he's acting totally normal so the vet said that's a good sign.
Update 3/27 - Well I dropped of a sample or Rocky's urine on Saturday. The vet just called me with the results and said that Rocky does indeed have the beginning of liver failure. He has to be started on fluid therapy ASAP once a day for five days and then blood work re-checked. The good thing is Rocky is acting and eating normal and his BUN came back only slightly elevated. I'm praying that this therapy helps him out. Please keep Rocky in your prayers!

Re: Worried....Long
Can you call another vet for a 2nd opinion? Let them know you have noticed a change in him, with his drinking and urinating.

Re: Worried....Long
I'm usually very happy with my vet and he's been the vet for my dog since we got him. I've had other emergencies with Rocky and he has called me late at night...DH is going to call again tomororw and be persistent to bring Rocky in. I'm just very worried....if the vet dismisses it again tomorrow I will find another one.

Re: Worried....Long
I had the same exact problem, I have a 5 year old pug and she was drinking excessive amounts of water and urinating a lot, but acting perfectly normal. I called the vet and he said to bring her in right away. I took her last night and received the blood work back today. He said the blood work was good, but her urine sample wasn't so I have to take away her water for 12 or more hours and see how much and how dark her urine is and bring it into the vets office for a sample. We will see what happens. I'm so worried!!! She is my baby and I couldn't imagine anything happening to her. I asked my vet last night if I should look out for any other signs of her turning for the worst and he said right now he has no information at all regarding what signs to look for. He said that a dog was brought in on Saturday regarding the recall acting fine, but the dogs kidneys totally shut down completely and he may pass away. They don't even know how to treat it, because they don't know what it attacking the kidneys. I hope your dog is okay. Please bring him to the vet immediately. Please keep me updated!!!! Good Luck!!!! I'm sorry if I worried you more.
PS: My dog was on Nutro also!

Re: Worried....Long
If your regular vet won't see him, I would definitely take him to another vet.
As Wishing4Baby said, they don't even know what is causing it so he has to be thoroughly checked out to make sure there is no damage to his kidneys.
Praying for both of your babies

Re: Worried....Long
OK I'm definitely bringing him in today. As far as the urine sample goes....are they looking for urine that is dark or clear. I have been examining his urine every time he goes and it's not dark at all. It's almost clear like when you drinks lots of water.

Re: Worried....Long...UPDATE at bottom
DH just came back from taking Rocky to the vet. They took blood, gave him and IV took his temp, etc. The vet said he looks good...he has a slight heart murmur but we knew that from his Nov. checkup. We have to wait tomorrow for the blood results. The vet did tell DH that most symptoms get worst within 4 days (i.e. the excessive urination would have been accompanied by vomiting diarehhea, etc.) but the thing is we noticed this a few weeks ago just never thought much of it until now. Looking back I want to kick myself in the a$$ for not taking him to the vet sooner. DH said he's super tired now....my poor baby....I feel so bad for him.
Send some prayers this way that all blood tests tomorrow come back normal. If they do see something in his blood we have to have him hospitalized.

which lab value are you describing? sounds like the BUN (blood urea nitrogen). if so, i wouldn't worry too much about a value that's just 4 points above the upper limit of normal - or at least i wouldn't worry about that in a human - may be different for a dog, but it sounds like the vet wasn't too concerned either.
did the vet tell you the value for creatinine? that's the more specific / important value when you're thinking about renal failure.

Re: Worried....Long....Update with blood results
Yes I think it was the BUN level. From research it doesn't seem like that level is too bad and the vet didn't seem too concerned but he does want a urine sample ASAP. Of course ASAP means tomorrow because DH & I are working now.
