I know I responded a few times but I'm fuming over it. My son has issues with eating & if someone forcefed him, I'd want them out of a job. I don't say that lightly in this economy but I would do everything in my capacity to get them fired. I agree with reporting the SEIT. I'd notify the parent & the agency.

While the SEIT doesn't report to the director, she is responsible for the safety & health of the children in that pre-school. All it would take is a choking issue & it could have been a very different day for that poor child & the family. I'd want that on record & documented via email to ensure that the school acted on it.

An email that cc's the parent. Something along the lines of:

"I expect that the school will address the issue with (teacher name), the SEIT assigned to (student name). I also expect as a mandated reporter for CPS, that the school values the safety of its children & understands that force feeding a child is not only considered abusive but a serious risk to the child's safety."

Thank you. This is spot on. The worst part is that every since the water incident on Friday, my DS is refusing to drink from a cup. Even when he brushes his teeth, he screams for a straw for his dixie cup! The kid is traumatized!!!!! Chat Icon

Also, I looked up both the teacher and SEIT on the NYS Department of Ed website. They both have only initial licenses. Hopefully after this it will stay that way! Chat Icon

If you know her name, report the Seit to the school district as well as cps. If you speak to the mother of the child she is seeing try to find out the agency she works for as well. If she's doing this to your child just imagine what she is doing to the one she is treating.

They should all be out of jobs, IMHO.

Re: Would any of these incidents between your child and a teacher bother you?

Wow, I'd be beyond angry. As a Catholic school teacher & a mom to a DS w/ feeding issues; there is just no justifying this. Wow.

I've had SEIT's in my room nearly every year & they've always assured me they are there only for that specific child. One year the SEIT started getting too big for her britches (hehe) reprimanding other children & assisting others and I stepped in & had to redirect her & tell her I appreciate her concern, but we got it under control.

I would definitely find out what agency she works for & report her.

Second, it sounds as if the teacher is very inexperienced & personally needed the help of the SEIT as she's in over her head. A child should not be in "time out" 3x a day--like others have said, she is not managing her room correctly. Positive reinforcement goes a long way; or what about a behavior management chart w/ stickers for doing the right thing?

I would definitely keep accurate notes of all your dealings w/ the teachers/principal, etc. as the teacher will also likely have a written record of all correspondence, talks, meetings w/ you & she may have a running record of his behavior in the classroom.

The force feeding is really getting to me as my son eats nothing & is going to feeding therapy & if someone force fed him or tried, it would set him back & really affect him.

I feel for you.

Re: Would any of these incidents between your child and a teacher bother you?

I am responding as the mom of a child in special ed, who also attends a daycare/preschool.

First, I have been told more than once that the teachers are NOT permitted to give the children time outs (even when I suggested it for a particular behavior). The re-direct the child and try to discourage the behavior in other ways. I don't see why it would be different in your DS's situation.

Second, the SEIT is there for the child in special ed, and that is where her energies should be focused. I would absolutely file a complaint with the agency that she is employed by. She shouldn't be working with children at all, IMO, and certainly not with special ed children. My DS has major challenges with eating and I would flip my freakin lid if I heard the teachers were doing stuff like this. If anything, a SEIT should be more patient and helpful than a regular ed teacher, not harsh and punitive.

Third, the principal is not responsible for this person? I call BS on that, and that is the main reason I would pull my kid out of the school. The principal is absoultely responsible for making sure that the SEIT is acting in a professional and appropriate manner, and if not, he/she should be working with the parent and the agency to find someone who is a better fit for the classroom. The child who is receiving services deserves to have his/her SEIT there, but it should not be disrupting or interfering with what is going on with the other students. It sounds like the teacher is not experienced enough to put the SEIT in her place, or is too lazy to put in the energy herself to help your son, so she lets the SEIT do it. Either way, it's inappropriate and the principal should have stepped in and done something about it.

I feel so bad your child had to experience such a nasty person. I hope you do everything you possibly can to report her.

Re: Would any of these incidents between your child and a teacher bother you?

Update:

So I called the school yesterday morning and the secretary answered. I identified myself and explained DS would not be in and will not be back until I speak with Mrs. X, as a very serious incident occurred on Friday and I must discuss it with her before he can return. (No sense telling them I am taking him out and risk these two teachers not getting properly reprimanded…).

The secretary had NO reaction and only said the principal would not be in all day, but that she’d give her the message. (The fact she had no reaction makes me wonder how often they get calls like this.) Wouldn’t you think the secretary would call the principal at home, on her cell, etc. the second she got a message like that?

I was guessing she never got the message, but surprise, the principal called my cell phone at 5:00pm today and left a message. She said she was in meetings all day today and will be in meetings all day tomorrow, but could meet on Friday. Well, I have a work committment on Friday so I guess it will be Monday. I'm sure she's hoping my anger will diminish, but it just makes me madder!

The good news is that we have an interview tomorrow at another school. I wasn’t even going to call them because they NEVER accept students mid-year. But the school is my alma mater, so I left a message with one of my former teachers at lunchtime. She called me back immediately and got us an appointment to see the principal within 10 minutes. We had planned to send DS to my alma mater starting in either K or 1st grade as it is an overall better school; we only sent him to this current school because it was more convenient and we thought, “Hey, it’s preschool, it’s only 2.5 hours, what could happen?” We were sooooooo wrong!

Re: Would any of these incidents between your child and a teacher bother you?

This is a universal Pre-K program? Funded by NYS? Omg I am so livid for you. If incident 1 even happened with my DS I would see red. What did the attorney say? I think you need to inform the principle you plan on reporting the incidents to CPS since the force feeding is a form of child abuse and the whole school could be in the pooper because they are considered MANDATED REPORTERS. Meaning if they saw it happen and didn't report it, or even heard it happened and took no action, it's not looking so good for them and especially since it happened with more than ONE child. Please do not let them get away with this. I can only imagine if this SEIT worked with a child who is actually having problems. I am so happy you are removing your son. I feel so terrible and reading how he didn't tell anyone until you came home broke my heart. Because that is what my Teddy would do. He would hold it in. He did this once when a teacher yelled at him from a different class. He didn't tell DH, nor anyone else until I walked in the door and he bursted into tears because it had eaten at him all day. Your son seems like a bright kid, and I agree he should be in a program that is excited about his testing results, and embraces the idea of challenging him, not holding him back. Also wanted to give you a link to the NYS CPS website about mandated reporters. It's a good link to have. JUST IN CASE. This is for everyone....if you see something, say something. Please! CPS
It also has a list of mandated reporters
