would parents be interested?

Hi parents. I could use your opinions about a service I may be interested in providing to children with special needs. FIRST, I want to be clear that I am NOT... NOT... trying to get referrals or work here and would hate for anyone to thing that i'm using this board for that purpose. I just really want some opinions from parents about whether this is a service you might find useful and would consider for your child... ONLY to get a sense of whether there's a demand for this service and if I should move forward. If anyone minds that I've posted this here, please just let me know and I will remove it right away!! If not, I really value your opinions here!


Here's the gist of what i'd like to do:

New York State Certified School Psychologist with a Master's Degree is Education in School Psychology and a Doctoral Degree in School/Clinical Child Psychology will provide in-home educational, organizational, tutoring, and therapeutic services to children grades K through 12 whose educational, emotional, and/or behavioral issues interfere with learning and academic potential. An individual remediation plan is developed for each student to identify his or her specific challenges and to generate and implement solutions, strategies, and techniques to manage and overcome them.

Goals may include:
Improving attention and concentration skills
Reducing test anxiety
Developing organizational and time management skills
Building self-esteem
Learning age-appropriate study, note-taking, and memorization skills
Parent consultation

Will work with parents to develop and implement schedules and behavior modification plans with tokens and rewards in order to improve behavioral issues interfering with academic success (for example, refusal, tantrums, acting out during homework time).

Complimentary initial 45 minute assessment with student and parent.

So, does this sound like something parents would be interested in... and if so, any ideas about how much you might be willing to pay?

I think a lot of parents would be interested. For me, how much I am willing to pay would really depend on how good the results are. I would be willing to pay out of pocket for something like this if I saw it having real results with my child.

Two things you might want to consider:
1.) will you take insurance? If I knew at least part of it would be covered, I might be more willing to hire you. I think there is also a new law coming down the pike that requires insurance companies to pay for some services for kids on the spectrum, so being able to accept insurance might increase your potential caseload.

2.) Schedule. I work FT and would need to have someone come in the evenings or weekends. I find that many service providers are unwilling or unable to do this, because they are with their own families at those times. I think we have the means to pay someone if necessary, but not everyone wants to work around our schedule.

i would be interested, only if my school didn't provide home hours for my DS and if you accepted insurance.

as much as i want my DS to thrive, i cannot afford tutoring at $50+ an hour a day.

if the SD didn't help out i would find alternate help with college students who are majoring in special ed and need hours.

but i am sure there is a market willing to pay...

I think there would be a demand for that for children who don't qualify for those type of services through CSE.

If it were me I would be more inclined to purchase something that was offered with a specific time frame and goals. Example- An 18 week session, you will teach the child and parent XY&Z, for x dollars.

I think the price will depend on the area honestly.
