hell yes. I would be ****** off. I HOPE I would get over it, but it would take me a while.
and I would put an order of protection out on my FIL for all future birthday cakes.

Wow.. you sound very angry. I am sorry this happened to you. But, i think the issue with your FIL is much deeper than blowing out candles.

if it was a kid, i would understand (my kid is always the one trying to blow out the candles, i have to shield him) but an adult?

I definitely would have relit the candles. I relit the candles when a kid did that at DD's 2nd birthday party... only I didn't get mad since it was a kid.
If my FIL would have done that I would call him out right then and there.. what the heck is wrong with him??

I wouldn't have been mad if it were a little kid, it happens. But a grown man? Did he think he was honestly just being funny? Ugh. Yes, you have every right to be irritated.
Next year i would make a BIG announcement that only your child is to blow out the candles.

Wow. I... I... I so don't get it. Really? You're losing sleep over this?
I would have been annoyed for about 3 seconds, then relit the candle and just told DC to blow it out (not start all over with the song, just the candle).
People can be idiots. Don't let it get to you to this extent. There are so many other things in the world to legitimately freak out about.

I think its weird that he did it but it probably wouldn't bother me. I just don't stress over stuff like that I guess.
I think I blew out both of my kids 1st b-day candles anyways as they would not do it on the day of ...

You know, I was thinking of doing that but realized that by the time I found the waitress for her lighter, the song would have been completely over & I would look like a psycho making everyone sing again. DH knows I'm ****** & this is typical for my IL's. They always need to be in the spotlight even when it has nothing to do with them. This took the cake & now I am distancing myself & where I don't go my DS doesn't go.
you and i would get along so well...my ILs drive me INSANE! I see them as little as possible! When I do see them...I leave there looking for a good therapist - I leave with so much anger bottled up...I know it's not healthy!
I would have been annoyed too!

I kind of understand him doing that since a 1 year old may not be able to BUT he should have at least waited til the song was over and did it "with" dc.
Did he think he was funny?
Did you all finish the song anyway and clap etc?
Did you ask him why?
What was everyone's reaction afterwards? I can't picture it!!

 I'm sorry, but this totally made me crack up (so much so, that I had to read it to DH).....thats crazy that a full grown man would steal the limelight from his own 1 year old grandson.

"wait wait wait....grandpa its not your bday and I am sure you will have MANY MANY more on your cake to blow out"
Then I would say "who has a light?" And I would start over and get that cr@p on tape so my DS can see what an @SS his grandpa is
