it seems odd that people would be willing to pay $800K for a house in a area with horrible schools
Some areas are just like that. My ILs neighborhood is. The houses are in the High 700,000s to start, and mostpeople send their kid to private school.
It is a nice area & the addres sis ina good town, but do to weird zoning they are technically part of of a town with lower taxes & crappy scools, but the bulk of that town & its questionable areas isn't really near them.
Houses there sell quickly, b/c it is a good location & I thin teh people who live there intend to send their kids to private schools anyway.
I don't know too much about Waterbury, but if you are iffy on the neighborhood I'd pass.
However, if you like the neighborhood & you don't mind sending your kids to privte school, your house would be less expensive than the other ones , so resale might not be an issue.

Hmm, I'd have to know more I think. Maybe some of us CT girls can try to provide more insight?
the house would be in Waterbury (hope i didnt offend anyone who lives there), in waterbury on the middlebury line. It's up the block from Teikyo Post university.
i've only been in CT for 8 years, but i have always lived on the shoreline of New haven county. This is new territory for me.
Everyone so far i've talked too, except a dr who lives in the same subdivision, said to stay away. I'm so confused.
Compartively, the other areas i am looking have much much better school districts, but i would get a smaller house that needs work.
My gut is telling me no, but i still have yet to go see the area myself.
Honestly, I'd pass. Even though you'd be near Middlebury, which is a great area, Waterbury is not a desirable area and it would probably be very tough to re-sell.
ITA. Although Waterbury is "getting better", I would pass.

No unless it's a waterfront property.

personally I wouldn't do it but that is because I'd rather send my non-existent kids to public school if I can. If you don't have kids or feel like the neighborhood is going to turn in the other direction then it could be worthwhile, but it is a risk, and a rather big risk.

Possibly. I know being in a good school district helps with your resale value, but not EVERYONE buying houses care about it.

thanks everyone for your input! I have alot to think about, and right now something is telling me no, but i'm def not going to make up my mind for sure until we take a swing by the area on Saturday.
Honestly, I've never been to waterbury, so i don't want to form a final opinion until i've seen it.
I'll update you guys after!
Thanks everyone
AND we are planning for this house to be our forever house, i moved ALOT in the last 8 years here in ct and don't want to do it ANYMORE!!!
