No way. Andrew would probably hurt it not on purpose but just because of his age. KWIM.

Nope because *I* would be responsible for taking care of it, and animals really aren't my thing! One fish is enough for me.

Big fat NO! I don't want smelly animals for my kids at any age. Blech! The dog is bad enough.

Turtles can carry Salmonella. They are not good pets for small children.

No way. Not until DD is old enough to take care of it herself.

I agree - I love turtles, but I would never want one as a pet.

Small caged animals are more high maintenance than a dog or cat, and they often just get ignored in the cage because they are boring, and they die a sad, lonely life. It teaches nothing about responsibility or animal companionship.

I will never get a caged animal for Cailen. I would get a companion like a cat or dog.

In my SIL's defense, my niece really misses their cats they had to give away in the spring and they aren't in the situation to get a new cat or a dog, so I think she was trying to help her.

I just think she should wait it out until they get into their house.

I would get a hampster for Julia, (if she wanted it) I know I would have to take care of it for her, but I know she would be very gentile to the pet and help me with it, she loves to learn about new things. My niece has 2 of them, and Julia loves them!

No turtles!

No - there was a story on the news the other day where those type of pets should not be given to little kids because of the diseases they can carry.

I was going to say that too.

3 is too young regardless for taking care of pets.

I would only do a fish at that age.

No Hamster or Turtles. We have a dog and fish and that's it. She loves her fish though and plays with the dog all the time. I always grew up with pets and love them myself so I guess she got that from me.

Re: Would you buy a hamster or a turtle for your 3 year old??

No turtles. But my friend's DD is 3 and has a guinea pig- she is very gentle and loving with it, and there house does not smell at all. Yes, my friend does most of the work but she knew that when she got it. Her DD lovves to help feed it and play with it in this little ball they have that lets it run around the house. So, when DS is older if he asked for something like that, then yes, I would. Just no turtles.

nope. too much work and a 3 year old would love it for 2 days and that would be that. I would only get a pet for myself if I wanted it, never for the kids no matter what it is

I would not. I feel like animals that small are targets for being thrown or something horrible like that. I think the toddler would play too rough

I know her heart is in the right place, but I feel everytime a caged animal is a pet because someone can't get a cat or dog, the animal just becomes this boring responsibility that winds up being ignored - after that initial novelty, kwim? They don't respond the way a dog or cat would, and if they nip or scratch, the kid is even afraid of touching it...

Ohhh, I totally agree with you Liza. I mean, my SIL will give it away, guaranteed.

I mean, we wanted a dog for years before we got Maggie, you just have to wait til the time is right.

Well, I know she decided against the turtle b/c it was tooChat Icon Chat Icon
