in where you live? If the tax proposal is a huge increase, you have no kids in school yet and just really can't imagine paying more taxes because of the economy?

As a teacher, is this taboo to do?

i'd vote no-

lets face it, half the time, these increases dont go towards things for the kids, they go towards sending administration to aruba

besides, there comes a point where you have to wonder "how much better can it really get"

I wouldn't vote no. And I personally think it is taboo for a teacher to vote no.

Re: Would you ever vote NO on a school budget

yes and i've done it before.

as a teacher, that may sound shocking. but sometimes, how much can you bleed people dry? the taxes on LI are so ridiculous. yes, i know as a teacher in a LI district, i benefit, but i think there are many, many, many things districts can do to be more fiscally responsible and conservative and unless enough people vote NO sometimes, they just increase and increase and increase it.

my poor parents may have to leave their house that they love because their property taxes alone are now 1/6 of their entire pension/social security income. and they're not even in a "desirable" town or district. that's not right, or fair. JMO....

Don't think it's taboo and I think you should vote how you feel....it's your right to vote. Teacher or not!

Our taxes are out of control...I might consider voting no...would never rule it out.

I would- with the straits we are in now, I think schools have to choose fiscal responsibility and I think there is probably a lot of "pork" in school budgets. Everyone has to tighten their belts right now. I wouldn't object to increases that were for good reason, but I really might vote no if I felt that an unfair burden was being placed on taxpayers.

I teach in NYC, and my school is getting new windows over the summer, to the tune of $6 million. Chat Icon

Re: Would you ever vote NO on a school budget

I know times are hard, but I wouldn't vote no since I worry every year that my district's budget will go down and many of my friend's jobs would be affected. Also, many of us who are tenured a very lucky to have secure jobs in these times. I will always vote yes, to support my fellow teachers unless it was discovered that the district was using money in an illegal way.

Our taxes are not only comprised of school tax, but also property tax. Can they do something about that?

I think those who are retired should get a break on their school taxes. It is not fair to them, since they are on a fixed income.

I would NEVER vote no. I worry enough every year about our budget going down. I can't imagine contributing to that fear for another teacher.

Re: Would you ever vote NO on a school budget

I live in the district that I work in and I always vote no! Let's face it, if I voted YES, I'd make a little more BUT they'd take out more taxes. I'd rather vote NO to keep my house tax lower!

Yes, but for most people the school portion of the total property tax bill is at LEAST 75% of it, for most people. if you actually look at what you pay for garbage, policce, fire, etc. it is MINISCULE compared to the school portion. the school taxes is why the property taxes are insane on LI.

I voted no this year and my son will be attending school next year. My neighbors and I need to afford our neighborhood. I don't understand why it would be taboo.

Re: Would you ever vote NO on a school budget

I have voted no, not in my district now, but when i lived with my parents and taught. The district was doing wacky things and put ridiculous things on the budget and what was planned on the budget didn't count for 1/2 of what the costs were actually. It voted yes and my parents taxes ended going up A LOT!!!

ETS: Its just like when the NYSUT calls your house constantly around election time and tells you to vote their way. I don't always do that either!

I'm not sure I could...but if it were an 18% increase, like sachem had that one year, I would probably.
