Would you feed these to your DC?
My SIL called me a few weeks ago & said her friend gave her baby food to give to us because her DC is no longer eating it & she didnt want it to waste. SIL dropped off the food today, it is 24 jars of beechnut stage 2 bananas with pears & apples, but the expiration date is 7/12/2009. That is about 2.5 weeks away. The beechnut food that I recently bought at BJs has an expiration date of March 2011. DH's cousin ate a jar & said there is nothing wrong with them, but I don't like the idea of feeding DS baby food that is potentially 2 years old. DH doesnt see a problem with giving it to DS.

Re: Would you feed these to your DC?
Definitely I would use them.
I am in the food industry. Most expiration dates on canned and jarred foods are for a year LESS than when the product would actually stop being good. In other words, if the date is 7/09 it is usually good for another year if stored correctly and unopened.
So I would have no problem using something that ISN'T expired yet.

since you are in the industry, i'm wondering if you know the answer to this question...
i've heard that expired medications are sent overseas to 2nd and 3rd world countries and that it's deemed okay. do you know if this is a practice done with food as well?

Re: Would you feed these to your DC?
Thanks Ladies, most you seem to say yes. My mom is going to try 1 jar with DS today, if nothing happens then I will continue to give them to him until a few day before expiration. I just know we are not going to use all 24 jars.
Anyone want a few jars?

Ditto. I definitely wouldn't see a problem with them.
On the other hand, just because a jar says "07/11", who's to say THAT jar isn't 2 years old?....

Not with anything I handle. The expenses involved are not worth the trouble.

Re: Would you feed these to your DC?
The expiration wouldn't bother me becuase it's still a few weeks away. But I probably wouldn't take it unless I knew where they were stored (temperature-wise)
