I wouldn't pait stairs white -it might look nice - but you'll be repainting every year to maintain it!!

I think your best bet is to stain them

Stain for sure. I think it last longer, I wouldn't want to have to paint everything every year or two.

Re: Would you paint or stain these stairs?

I would definetly stain. Cabots (sold at many hardware stores and HD) as well as Woodscapes (Sherwin Williams) are great brands and come in a variety of stain colors and finishes (solid, semi-solid, semi-transparent, clear).

I recently stained a small deck. I chose Cabots solid in a color to match the gray shingles. For your project, I would chose a gray that matches the house or a shade darker and white for the risers, posts and railings. I know you mentioned white for the underside but I would stain the same color as the stairs. The white will require more maintenance as it will show more dirt.

Good luck and post pics when project is completed.

I talk with DH last night and we are going to stain the stairs. We will get some samples of grays for the steps and then we will get a white sample too.

I did mention white for the underside, but not the underside of the stairs, it was for the underside of the 2nd floor deck. I think we will do that in the white stain now instead of the white paint. The stain will last longer. The underside of the stairs we might do the same as the stair treads. We will see. Thanks! Def. will post pics when done. Chat Icon
