Would you prefer to have the washer and dryer on the first or second floor?

Right now we have them on the main level, but we're thinking of moving them upstairs where the bedrooms are. Any opinions? Thanks!

We just moved ours to the second floor. My husband had them on the second floor at his condo and it made doing laundry SOOOOO much easier!

there was a thread recently about this. The worries are leaks and structural damage.

I've heard it can make your whole house shake. Also, you need to be careful about any leaks and def put in a drain. If it weren't for those concerns, I'd love the convenience.

1st floor.

I don't need a hose to burst and have water running down the sheetrock and such

This would be my worry. My washer just leaked a few weeks ago in my basement so it was just a hassle nothing more, but it was enough water that on the 2nd floor it would have been an issue!

We have a laundry room in the basement and I prefer it there in case of leaks.

While I appreciate the convenience of 2nd floor laundry, I'd prefer main floor....

We have ours in the basement. It may be a pain to bring the laundry up all the way to the 2nd floor (we have a cape), but i rather have the extra exercise then dealing with water damage. We had a small leak in the hose, it could have easily turned into a nightmare if they weren't down there.

Ours is on the floor with the bedrooms - love it! There is a pan it sits in so if it leaks, it won't damage anything. You can also build the floor like a tiled shower floor with a drain in the bottom to catch any leaks. We've had it for three years and no problems.

I don't have a drain but we love ours on the 2nd floor. Been that way for almost 8 years. No issues whatsoever.

I have a ranch, and ours are in the basement, although it would be more convenient to have it on the main living floor, I think its better downstairs in case of leaks etc...

I'd love a washer and dryer, period! But after hearing stories about leaks, either the basement or first floor mudroom area.

Re: Would you prefer to have the washer and dryer on the first or second floor?

I have a question for the people that dont like the idea of the second floor because of leak or the house shaking etc.. I live in a 2nd floor apartment and we have a washer and dryer and never have a problem with leak or shake and I dont think it is damaging the structure. So wouldnt it be the same deas as in a house??

I hope to have them on the second floor in our next home. I'd rather not have to carry baskets up and down the stairs.

Re: Would you prefer to have the washer and dryer on the first or second floor?

I would never have one on the second floor. I can understand the convince, but I worry about a possible leak that could happen. I never thought about that possiblilty until talking to a contractor.
I saw Holmes on Holmes guy say the same thing about washer on second floor.

Plus, I feel like you are mainly on the first floor of your house the majority of the time. I fold all my clothes either on the kitchen table or the coffee table in the living room. I guess it depends on your preference.

Ours is on the main floor and I like it there. However, I do the wash but my 10 year old folds all the clothes and puts them upstairs.Chat Icon
She doesn't put them away of course- only her own.
