Would you say something?

OK, so I was at the supermarket with DS last night picking up some things. We get in line behind a young woman who proceeds to put all of her groceries from the cart on the belt.

Then I notice that she has a bag of charcoal and lighter fluid on the bottom part of the shopping cart that she obviously missed putting on the cart... or forgot was there.

My question is, would you say something to her about the fact that she forgot to put the items on the belt?

I never had a chance because the guy at the register ended up seeing it, but I couldn't help but question whether or not to say something. The guilty conscious part of me would have not allowed me to NOT say something. I was just curious to know what other people would do. Would you let her forget about the items even though you see them and let her leave without paying for them?

ETA: I guess if the cashier didn't say something and I was in that position, I would feel very guilty after the fact if I witnessed someone stealing something (on purpose or by accident).

Re: Would you say something?

That is a good question. I don't know what I would do. I would like to think I would but I don't know if I should just mind my own business. It is so hard with certain situations because you don't know how people are going to react.

I am a firm believer that some things are just none of my business! So, no, I wouldn't say anything.

Funny you posted this- I was in Michael's yesterday and the woman in front of me had 3 or 4 small unframed prints in the basket under her stroller. I didn't say anything. The rest of the things she was buying were already on the counter.

Oh, and as a former supermarket cashier, we were reminded regularly to check the bottoms of carts for stuff like that. So really, it was the cashier's responsibility.

that is why i would have said something. i mean, i'm not going to be like "hey!! those items!!" (lol) but i know for a fact that a lot of people steal things this way -- and i'm giving her the benefit of the doubt that it just slipped her mind. but, to me, it is preventing loss of money which in turn affects all of us. that's just my thinking. hiding stuff and 'forgetting' about them in the baby stroller is another common way. of course, that could be innocent too. that's why if you say something in a non-chilant manner it shouldn't be a big deal. if it were me, i'd want someone to tell me - i wouldn't want to look like i was trying to steal b/c if a security person sees you later they are going to think you did it on purpose.

Really, I'm surprised so may people said they wouldn't say anything.

I usually err on the side of minding my own business, but it wouldn't even occur to be there there would be any reason to NOT say something.

I would assume they would end up leaving in it the store (as DH has done, he doesn't take the cart out to the car), not that they would walk out with it & not pay for it, but either could happen I guess.

I would've said something similar.... kind of in a concerned-sounding voice rather than a grocery-store-police kind of voice. Chat Icon

I would have said something very innocently because when I was a cashier people would always tell me AFTER the customer left and I would be so afraid that I was going to get in trouble for it!
