Re: Would you say something?

I'd mind my own business. As a PP said, the cashier is responsible for checking. I wouldn't get involved.

A simple "I would mind my own business" would have been just fine.

IMO I am not the "store police." I would not say anything. Its the cashier's job to catch it. The store is not paying me to be security.

Devil's Advocate here.... External Image

But, the store *IS* charging you more to cover items that leave the store unpaid for....

Sometimes, even the best cashiers *such as myself* forget Chat Icon

I am not saying everyone should say something - I am just saying that *I* would say something because I know what it is like to realize AFTER the person has left the store.

So...wait... would anyone's opinion be different if the OP asked about letting someone know that she had neglected something on the bottom of the cart when she was loading her car in the parking lot?

I can't believe I've been thinking about this still. Chat Icon

I'm speculating, but I bet the woman forgot. If it was something like a few cases of beer that was more expensive, I would be more likely to lean towards intention (even though that could also be an innocent mistake).

I also might have said, "Wait, people still use charcoal?" Chat Icon

I added some additional thoughts about that in my OP... I would feel very guilty if I witnessed someone taking items from a store without paying for them.... essentially stealing (doesn't matter if it was intentional or not)

Personally I would hold some guilt if I didn't say something. I was just wondering what other people would do. Chat Icon

Ooh, very interesting point. Somehow I have a feeling that a lot of people who say that things are "none of their business" would have a change of heart if it came to someone forgetting items that they paid for!!! Chat Icon

i would have said it in a very innocent and non-chilant way... "oooh your charcoal underneath the cart - i always forget stuff when i put it under there!"

I would've said something similar.... kind of in a concerned-sounding voice rather than a grocery-store-police kind of voice. Chat Icon
