Would you take a pay cut to keep your job?
or to avoid having your company lay people off even if you weren't one of the people being laid off?

Yes, b/c eventually you could be one of those people who is being laid off.
In the meantime I would start looking for a new job.

Re: Would you take a pay cut to keep your job?
Well, I highly doubt any company would leave it up to the other employees to either agree to or say no to a pay cut to avoid other people being laid off. The only "choice" I think people have when the company offers a pay cut is to accept the pay cut or leave. That's a pretty easy decision for me in this economy.
So yes, I'd accept the pay cut, and depending on the severity of the cut and the state of other companies in my industry, I'd start job hunting ASAP.

Re: Would you take a pay cut to keep your job?
For sure we don't have that choice, but I was just wondering if people would tell their bosses to fluck off!
I would accept the cut. Not sure if I would leave the job though.

I would take a pay cut if it would save my job, my coworkers jobs and/or my company.

To save my job--I would really have to think about it and do the math to make sure it was worth it.
For my co-workers--oh, hellz NO!!!

Re: Would you take a pay cut to keep your job?
I'd accept it, just to not be unemployed, but I wouldn't pretend to be ok with it & I would start looking immediately.
ETA- we have a salray freeze for 2009, which I am not happy about, but I am not leaving over it. If the economy improves as a whole, and salaries here do not, then I would leave.

Re: Would you take a pay cut to keep your job?
yes, but it would depend how much of a pay cut. if it up to 15%, I would say yes. anything more, I am updating my resume.

Re: Would you take a pay cut to keep your job?
we have a salary freeze too. No pay raises for anyone.
I also got two more managers added to my plate and I work for a very senior person who is high maintenance.
I look at it as a salary cut since I didn't even get a COLA bump.
We may be asked to take a cut. I don't know how you can do that to the low hanging fruit..they make the lowest...
Just a vent.
I heard some grumblings...
The market is so crappy out there so I wouldn't attempt to make a move unless I knew someone somewhere who could help me.
It's slim pickings.

Re: Would you take a pay cut to keep your job?
we were informed last week that all salary increases for 2009 are scrapped.
I see what you're saying about more work for the same pay - yea, I guess that is like a pay cut. doing more with the same...
but like you said - in this market - it is TOUGH out there

Re: Would you take a pay cut to keep your job?
I would agree knowing I would be sending my resume out the next day.
BTDT many years. Then the next year, you hear that your company posted record profits.
I have heard some many times "you should be glad you have a job". Yet, you work unbelievable hours, do the job of 2 or 3 people because they have a hiring freeze, salary freeze. So in essence you work your butt off just to say you have a job until they are done with you and you are next on the list.
I would be only staying until I find another job.

Is it legal to cut pay without cutting hours?

Is it legal to cut pay without cutting hours? As long as your pay is above minimum wage, why wouldn't it be legal?

to help others, yes, I would take a cut in pay and hours. To just keep my job, no, I'd let them fire me and find other work.
