Would you travel to Mexico?

I'd love to go to the Mexican Riviera Maya area. It is such a short direct flight and there are several amazing resorts that I'd love to go to. DH does not want to travel to Mexico.

Re: Would you travel to Mexico?

We recently traveled to Cancun. We had no issues at all and felt completely safe at all times

Re: Would you travel to Mexico?

Why not? The problem is on the US borders. I've been to Riviera Maya and Puerto Vallarta in the last few years and it was fine. Just use the same common sense you would use anywhere.

Would you travel to Mexico?

To Riviera Maya? Sure. It's totally safe in the tourist areas on the east coast of Mexico. The areas that are having instability are mainly border towns close to borders of California, Arizona, Texas, etc. there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Cancun/Riviera Maya area.

My g/f and her hubby just went last month...had a great time. I can't remember what part they went to though. I know it was an all inclusive and they left the resort one day to see the ruins.

Would you travel to Mexico?

Absolutely! We go every year. Acapulco is an area you have to worry about, but not Riviera Maya.

DH and I were talking about this last night - I would, he says he wouldn't.

ILs go to Puerto Vallarta every year with no issues and there are so many deals right now for the Cancun/Riviera Maya area, I'm dying to go!!!

Re: Would you travel to Mexico?

we went to riviera maya 2 years ago and it was perfectly safe. We stayed at the resort. We went to Isla Mujeres last year and it was very very safe and we walked in the town. We always make sure to be aware of our surroundings no matter where we are. We are hoping to go back to Isla next year and would like to someday own a condo there. mexico is a large country and some places are much safer than others.

Am having a hard time convincing DH!

I want to either go to Banyan Tree or Rosewood. Both resorts look amazing!

DH says let's just go on a Disney cruise.

Re: Would you travel to Mexico?

I would, but not with my kids...my cousin had a horrible
experience with her son getting sick there, and we just don't want to risk a situation like that. We have brought our kids other places without hesitation (BVI, USVI).

ETA: He didn't get a stomach bug...he had a major ear infection (unrelated to Mexico) but it was the dealing with healthcare/doctors/medicine that was the major issue

Re: Would you travel to Mexico?

Yup. I've been to Mexico more times then I've been to Conn. or Penn. Mexico is fine. Like someone else said, the problem is by the borders and it's been like this forever. There are military in the airports with rifles but it's been like this for as long as I can remember (I was born there and went back every year starting at the age of 12mo.).

When DH and I went to Riveria Maya we stayed at Secrets Capri and had a great time. We even took a taxi to the local town to just walk around. It was fine. The DR and Jamaica aren't any safer but many people don't have a problem going there.

As for getting sick, just be smart. I've never been sick there and have been to other states in Mexico that aren't so touristy, ate some food off street vendors and was fine. As for the water, yes, if this is your first time there make sure you brush your teeth with the bottled water that's in your rooms. All water in the resorts are filtered but just for piece of mind this is the route I would take.

Re: Would you travel to Mexico?

Absolutely! We went in April and are thinking about going back with the kids in Nov. We went to Cancun and felt completely safe the whole time. We generally don't leave the resort. DH was hesitant a year or two ago but once we looked into it he was fine with it.

Would you travel to Mexico?

Mexico is amazing and I just got an email from the resort we stayed for our honeymoon offering me a great deal. I already have a trip planned or I would have booked it. We stayed in Riveira Maya and it was so safe and beautiful.

DH and I have both been to Mexico several times, just not recently. I don't know if we have become overly cautious because we are parents now or things are significantly worse. Maybe it is a mixture of both.

I have traveled to Egypt, Turkey, Morocco and Jordan and I would probably never go there now with or without the kids.

I love Mexico. One of my favorite destinations. We went last in 2009, Puerto Vallarta. It was amazing. We ventured off the resort and went into the city via bus - we almost got lost - but definitely always felt safe. I'd like to go back soon.

I went in August. I wasn't worried at all and I usually worry about everything. We stayed at Excellence Playa Mujeres which is all inclusive so we never left the resort.

I went last year. Felt safe, just use the same caution you would anywhere else. The border areas are so far from Cancun... it would be like not going to NYC bc there were problems in TX.
