Would you travel to Mexico?

We went to Riviera Maya in 2011. We never left the resort, but we had no need/desire to. Had no problems, felt safe and would go back in a heartbeat.

I have and I would again!

I preferred Cabo over Riviera Maya.

Re: Would you travel to Mexico?

Mexico is absolutely safe, as long as you don't leave your resort. Just pick a nice one and you will be wanting for nothing and have a great time!

Re: Would you travel to Mexico?

Yes! Definitely!
Mexico is a safe travel destination. It's a huge country and the tourist areas you'd be visiting are not near the violence. We all know of "bad" areas here in the USA but we wouldn't tell people not to visit our country because of them, right?

I am a certified Magic of Mexico Specialist and would love to help you plan a safe, relaxing, and fun trip. If you or your hesitant hubby's (mine is hesitant about a lot of destinations, so I can totally relate) have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out to me. My services are free and no question is too big or too small. My goal is to make travel accessible and fun for everyone. I want to eliminate the fear and anxiety associated with travel.

Just be patient the next few days/weeks as I broke my hand and have an assistant typing out my replies for me right now. I can be reached by email or phone where I can help directly.

Re: Would you travel to Mexico?

A friend of mine said to me, it's an area as big as the state of Texas - for example - and say Dallas is very bad and you are asking about an area that is hours from Dallas. KWIM??

I have gone twice - I was fine, we felt safe. That being said, the first time we did leave the resort to do two excursions. I did not feel the safest doing those -- and the drive to them made me nervous. The second time, we went to the resort ONLY and used the most secure transfers to/from the airport THROUGH THE RESORT and American Express Travel. We would never get in one of those random cabs that they have lining up at the airport -- and you will see when you land, they attack you for a fare! We had the transfer waiting for us, thank goodness.

We stayed at Excellence Playa Mujeres - just outside Cancun and it was the best place I have ever been to. Just FABULOUS. I went there both times, that's how much I liked it.

Now that I'm PG, will I bring my son there? Probably not. I just - IDK, I can see taking chances with my life but I just get a little too nervous with him. I think we will opt for another place next time. But I think if you go to a safe area, plan a secure transfer, and do NOT leave the resort you should be OK. Also, stay within the limits on the beach at the resort -- the resort area ends and then anything can happen -- I had a good friend mugged on the beach at knife-point - he didn't realize that he had went beyond the "boundary" of the beach that the hotel sits on. There was a nearby police officer that saw the whole thing, didn't get involved, and when he questioned him afterwards the officer made it like he didn't speak english, couldn't understand him, and saw nothing. The police are not like they are at home -- NOT AT ALL. There's quite a few police there and government agencies that are totally corrupt and "in" with the criminals -- so, just be smart and safe.

But, I would say this for a few places honestly -- Jamaica, Barbados just to name two places that I have been and would advise, pre-book safe transfers, only stay on the hotel, and be careful. So, all in all, it's a personal decision but I gave you my own personal experiences :) HTH!
