Would you use oil based paint on something you are bringing into the house?
DH and I tried staining our front door yesterday and it did not come out good at all. The previous owner did not strip it as well as we thought he did. The only way to fix it is to use an oil based primer and paint. We could paint it outside and then bring it in. Would you do this with a young child in the house? I keep hearing how bad oil based paint is. Should we just buy a new door for $150?

We did on our front and back doors. We just did it on a warm day so that we could keep all the windows open for extra ventilation. Both of the kids seemed fine.

we primed our bathroom after removing the old wallpaper. Previous owner never primed before the wallpaper. We had to use an oil based primer b/c of the glue (latex could activate it). In our local paint store I got an odorless oil based primer. By no means did I think it was odorless, but it was definitely less than regular oil based paint! Maybe you can look into that?

You should stop by Aboff's or Janovic. I've found them to be so helpful at both stores.
But honestly when we did our doors with the oil based paint it didn't smell that bad.
