DS has had a runny nose for a while. Our 6 month appointment is tomorrow. My gut is telling me not to give him the next round of shots while his immunity is not 100%. What would you do and why?
TIA!!

I picked other, but its no but not by my decision. While I wouldnt vaccinate DC while he was sick, my pedi would never do it anyway.

Sick WITH a runny nose or just has a runny nose?

I would if he had a runny nose, but not if he was sick too

I say yes. Medically speaking there's no reason not to vaccinate a kid with a cold. However, if the kid is really miserable giving vaccines on top of a cold will make them feel even more crappy. So if it's just a cold then yeah vaccine. If the kid has fevers, vomiting, diarrhea, bad cold, I'd hold off to be nice.

My ped doesn't vaccinate at any sign of a cold.

Neither does mine. That's why Abby is about a month behind in her shots.

Re: Would you vaccinate at 6 months if your child had a cold?

NO...and this is from when i was under a year old my pediatrician vaccinated me with the measlel shot I had a cold and was running a slight fever. (back then i dont think they did the MMR combined, it was all separate).

I went into 106 fever later that nite, seizures and convulsions. My mom said i was in the hospital for 2 weeks and the dr.s told her that i would be lucky if i was brain dead.

Here I am 30 years old and well, but my DS WILL NOT be getting any vaccines if he is not 100% well at any time. I've already told this to our pediatrician, but they wouldnt give him anything if he wasn't 100% well.

(and this isnt to scare you b/c this was back in 1979 and the dr. knew he did wrong b/c by the time my parents went to sue him, he had left the state and couldn't be found).

My ped's practice is to vaccinate unless they have a fever.

Runny nose especially I would do it because my DS gets a runny nose while teething that can last for a month.....

Hey everyone, thanks for the replies. I should clarify a little. DS has had a runny nose for 2 months! Took him to the doctor 2 weeks ago and he had a little fluid in the ear. Doc gave antibiotics and everything cleared up. Runny nose started again 2 days ago. So, that's where we are at. I DO think some of this is teething related. He is drooling like crazy, biting down on everything, screeching a lot more and overall "off". No fever though. I'm leaning towards no vaccination, but I know my doc is going to pressure me. ETA: Haha reread my post and just want to add that I took him to the doc a couple times in the 2 months, I didn't just wait 2 months. Don't want you to think I'm a mean mommy. Chat Icon
