Wow - my heartrate!!!! A success story!
So since I changed my workout when I run to not exceed 150-155 BPM (to keep my workout aerobic), it was a major challenge, and very frustrating.
I would go home to DH, and complain that I wasn't getting enough of a workout, I was moving too slow, and this was BS. Sometimes I couldn't even break 4 MPH without my heart rate going up too high. My body was very exhausted and it would go up that quickly.
However - I *DID* say I would give this a month.
So, I stuck to it for a few weeks - not even a month, and tonight, the most amazing thing happened.
I had to WORK to get my heartrate up to 150!!! At over 5 mph, my HR stayed at around 142 BPM. I had to work even harder to get it up to 150 BPM.
So, as frustrating as it all was, this really worked to help me aerobically and made my heart more efficient when I ran. I came home in shock - AND - get this - barely broke a sweat!!!!

Pardon my ignorance, I have never heard of this. So are you making yourself "less in-shape" (by not working out too hard) and then getting in-shape again (making it tough to get your heart rate up)?

Pardon my ignorance, I have never heard of this. So are you making yourself "less in-shape" (by not working out too hard) and then getting in-shape again (making it tough to get your heart rate up)? That's the misconception - and the mindset I have been working with for the longest time - and have not made any improvements in my aerobic capacity and hit a major plateau. Unfortunately, I was just as ignorant, so trust me - I hear ya. Unfortunately, not too many people know about this - it's an athlete thing, not a common knowledge thing - DH is a runner - and it's such an important thing to keep in mind when working out. I always knew I was working too hard, but my ego got in the way of making these changes.
One day DH asked me - You know, you keep doing the same thing all the time and you aren't seeing the changes you want - why don't you just TRY this and see what happens? Since he was doing this, he shaved so much time off his races, I figured why not...
I told DH every night that I was doing nothing during my workouts
I thought for sure I was getting out of shape until I saw the true improvement in my heart rate and my stamina - I felt so good during my run, and was able to keep up a faster pace for a longer time frame with a lower heartrate!!! - I built it like a muscle - a high heart rate doesn't really mean a workout, it means you are working out too hard, and maybe not in as good shape. So even though it seemed like I am less in shape because I have to work harder to get my heart rate up, the truth is, my heart is more efficiet, so I am in better shape, can now run faster at a lower heartrate, and go longer distances without getting tired... all a part of good fitness.
I always thought if I wasn't gunning it, I was doing nothing. This was more challenging for me - but such a pay off. I even lost some inches doing this!
Since it's working for me, I'm going to stick with it - not give up after a month which was my original plan. I want to see how my times are in a few races I'll be doing.... I may throw in some high intensity into a run here and there, but for the aerobic building, I am going to keep my heartrate within 65-75% of my max
I feel like a convert. I never thought I would see a change like this!!!!

I always heard about the fat burning zone, but you will not improve your speed by doing only aerobic...you need to train in the anaerobic zone to train your body how to deal with lactic acid
this was many years ago, but i remember my track coach said the faster your hb goes up, the better shape you are.

this was many years ago, but i remember my track coach said the faster your hb goes up, the better shape you are. Mine goes up fast, and then recovers fast - which is really important for fitness level... I never had a problem with the fit part - I am so fit - but I couldn't get to the next level... I needed to get used to training within my aerobic zone - I have the anaerobic part - it's staying in the aerobic zone that was an emotional challenge for me - I guess it is what i needed in order to get to the next level. My own little personal goal - plus getting past the doubt that this is just as important as being the power demon I always pushed myself to be!
ETA - I also will be doing high interval training workouts as well. I need that balance of everything - plus yoga, spinning, and cross training.... I don't believe in doing just one type of workout. Boring and your body gets in a rut!

thats awesome!! that means your heart is in good shape!!! I know when I first started working out mine was really high. Now its fairly low even when I move pretty fast! Your body gets used to exercise..so this is definately a good thing! means your heart is healthy!
