It really is shocking how much you can spend without realizing it.
DH "audited me" last month and by May 17th, I had already spent close to $1000, just on "stuff!  Needless to say, it has been a purchase-free June so far!

I NEED to do this! Now that I am on my own I need to be much more aware of my spending! I decided to join BJ's because I go to the supermarket WAY too many times a week and its killing me!!

Beth you amaze me at how organized you are. I tried doing that but trying to get my DH to cooperate is another issue.

An old friend of mine did this at one point in her life. Her and her DH wrote down everything then sat down with her mom (who was an accountant and VP for a major bank) and went over where she could save some.
Then tehy set their budget and used CASH. So each month on the 1st they took out X amoutn and put it in envelopes for their separate expenses, Food, Dry cleaning etc. And that was all the could spend.
Once they became good at living on the budget they were allowed to use their CCs again but using Cash was an eye opener as its just too easy to over spend with credit!
