WR - shower gifts and registry question...
I'm in a good friend's wedding. (The wedding is in early 2009, so the shower isn't even in the planning stages yet.)
Out of curiosity, I looked up my friend's registry and saw they were registered at two places, not for a tremendous amount of stuff, but a good amount since it's a small wedding, but most of it had been purchased already. I emailed my friend just to ask where they were registered, thinking maybe there was somewhere else. She told me the two places I already looked and then said "You can look, but there's probably not much there. My MIL is pretty much buying everything." I asked her if they planned to register for anything else and she said no.
Sooooo... apparently every couple of weeks, her MIL goes and buys more stuff off the registry. What are we supposed to do when the shower rolls around? Should I just buy a gift now and hold onto it so her MIL doesn't buy everything for them? What are guests for the shower supposed to do?
Would you get something off the registry this far in advance or would you wait -- and if there is nothing left on the registry when it's time for the shower get her something else?

You can give her a gift card, or even money I am sure she could use either......What about the honeymoon? Try to find out more about that and maybe you can doing something related to the honeymoon. You can also make her a basket full of home essentials that she didn't register for like, detergent, soaps etc.

Re: WR - shower gifts and registry question...
One of my favorite gifts were the holidays baskets I got. My cousins gave me one basket for each holiday. But my mom did a basket with little things for each holiday (sometimes my cousins are unreliable and my mom knew how much I liked this idea). I would suggest doing something like that.

I would leave it for now and see if you can get her to add some stuff when it gets closer to the shower.

Re: WR - shower gifts and registry question...
for my good friend's shower, when i saw that most of the stuff was flying off her registry, i went to the store to get her gift. i had to hold it for about 2 months, but it was already gift wrapped so no big deal.
if you don't want to do that, i would say to just get her a GC to one of the stores she is registered at, so she can use it towards something she might not have wanted to put on her registry.
her MIL sounds like a nutjob. a very generous nutjob, but all the same...

OMG, you have NO idea. I actually feel really, REALLY bad for the bride's mother because the MIL is sort of taking over (and my friend just goes right alone with it).
They'll also be living on the same block as the MIL after they get married. That's a whole other very long story...

Only she doesn't see it yet.
Right now, both she and her husband still live at home. Neither has ever lived on their own... It'll be an interesting first year for them.

Re: WR - shower gifts and registry question...
If you don't mind holding on to the gift for a few months and really want to buy something of the registry then get it now.
Otherwise hold off and if there's nothing left on her registry by the time the shower rolls around either get her a GC, cash or just something else totally off the board.
Why is her FMIL buying everything off the registry?? Seems kind of strange.
