WWYD - Both home and parenting related....fence ?? - pics added

Now that I've been sitting in my backyard with this great weather we've been having...something is bothering me that I never had to think about before.

We have steps going into our basement from the patio. There is a side that is open (we have small bushes there) but a child can - god forbid - fall down. Then there are the stairs -- a child can fall down there also.

I'm not so much worried about Jack - but more for the 45 kids that will be here for Jack's party.

Should I get a gate/fence put up before then? It is really not an expense I have even thought about - and don't really want to shell out the $$ right now if I don't have to....but if it's a safety hazard then I def. will. I am going to see if I have a pic to show you girls what I'm talking about.

ETA: pics. They are random shots - some even before we did the grass - but you get the idea.

In the pic where the three bushes are...that's where the drop is.

I would get a railing for sure on both sides, eventhough that one side is very small. People will be more cognizant of the railing then just a drop down.

I have two big storage benches that I can block it off for the day....do you think I can get away with it for right now? It would be totally blocked.

That would probably work..but if they sit on them, will the benches move?

Of course - you know me - I had to run out and move the benches to show you girls! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am sick in the head - I fully admit it.

Anyway - I think I would put signs on them "DO NOT SIT!"

You are too funny!! Chat Icon I still think the benches are fine, but what do you think would happen if people sat on them? Would they move?

Well, right now they would bc there is nothing in them...but I would load them up with stuff the day of the party so that they didn't go anywhere!

I dunno about that idea Diana..what if a little kid stands on the bench and falls backwards?

Diana - what if you load the inside for weight and then use the benches for the presents...stack them up and around? This way the benches are totally useless for the kids and the parents will definitely shoo them away if they see them lingering near the gifts?

oh geez - you're right.

UGH!

Ok.

My cousin said he could put a piece of plywood up and block it totally....that would look ugly though. Ugh - should I just suck it up and get some estimates of fences????

I could actually just move the gift table there - put gifts underneath it completely blocking the area under the table - and gifts to the left of it (under the porch) -- I think that's what I'll do.

Thanks for your help! DH will be pleased to know I am not making us spend any more unexpected $$ before this party!

If putting the fence up would be beneficial to Jack in the future I would just do it now. Doesnt need to be a big fence.

If its just for the party, no I wouldnt do it, b/c your backyard party would become way more expensive then a backyard party should be KWIM?

I think the gift idea is a good one.

Eventually, I do want to put a fence up back there. I had absolutely no intention of doing it this year. Probably next year. I think it would cost at least 1K - and I would rather hold off on that expense for right now --- between his party and going to Italy - I would rather save the $$.

I thought in your Original post you meant a fence just around that small area, not a FULL fence.

I mean a wrought iron fence on the side with the bushes and the small side by the porch and then a gate at the top of the steps. That's what we would end up doing there. Did that make sense?Chat Icon

I think this would work out great for Jack's party! No need to put a fence up before you are ready just for the party.

How much do you think something like that costs? I was estimating between 800-1000. The railing around my porch was 1500. That's PVC though so that's why I think it would be more....and I need a gate on this one.

oh gosh I dont know. That just seems like sooo much.

We are getting a nice cheap PVC fence outside around the whole yard and our backyard goes on forever, maybe double or 3 times your whole yard and its way under $1000.....But that shows how clueless I am Chat Icon Chat Icon I should shut up now Chat Icon

You are putting up an entire PVC fence - 6ft? for 1000? I'm so confused - my PVC fence cost well over $3000. We have to be talking about different things I think? Chat Icon

ETA: You are doing that with a rental too? That's nice of you guys.

I like this idea too. You could probably put the bench under table. Another thing you could do is make that more the adult area so the kids have no reason to go there.
