WWYD - carseat related
I need to have Jack's carseat turned facing forward and the carseat installer I normally go to was on vacation for a month and supposed to be back yesterday. I have called about 100times and still no answer.
I NEED his seat turned around now. He is so tall and I think it must be really uncomfortable since he screams the entire time now.
I have called basically every number on the list for installers and only one will be calling me back - the rest don't have appts. till at least September.
I don't feel comfortable having anyone else just turn it around. Do I wait it out or try and beg someone to squeeze me in?
I know lots of people have their DHs do it - but I personally do not feel comfortable not having a professional do it - especially after reading the stats of how many are put in incorrectly.

We take our carseat in and out all the time. I would just have DH do it. You can always go get it checked. It's not that hard, especially if you're using the LATCH system.

Re: WWYD - carseat related
Do you have the LATCH system....because it is really easy with the latch. We installed it ourselves and had it checked a few weeks later. Well DH installed it and then I went and read the book and made sure it was right

Re: WWYD - carseat related
DH installed ours and we didn't have it checked. Britax has video instructions on their website. You can always have it checked by a professional after DH installs it.
Also, if Jack is not over the height max for the seat, it is safe to keep him rear-facing until you can get an appointment.

I would install it yourself and take it to where you bought it from and have them check to make sure you put it in ok.

Caden's carseat gets moved around all the time...I would just do it myself...as the PP said if you are concerned just bring it to the firehouse and have them check it.

Re: WWYD - carseat related
I dont know where you are located but Hassell Auto Body in babylon on Rt 109 does them Monday - Friday from 8:30-4. You DO NOT need an appt. I have been there a few times already and never waited more than 5 mins. The girl Jennifer there is a real sweetheart too. She will show you step by step and explain everything to you as well.
I feel the same way you do and I wouldnt be comfortable with DH or someone else doing it. JMO.

Re: WWYD - carseat related
What kind of car seat is it??
Just make sure you read the manual and you should be fine. When turning around my Britax Marathon, I didn't realize that the latch clips had to be switched over to the other side, or else when you turn the seat around, they are upside down.

Re: WWYD - carseat related
I would ask her to show you step by step how to install it so that you are 100% comfortable in doing it yourself. God forbid your car broke down or something and you had to switch the carseat into another vehicle..at least you would know how to do it then

Re: WWYD - carseat related
Your DS is barely over 1 year. IMO, keep him rear-facing for at least 18 months. He may look uncomfortable, but he's really not. It is SO much safer keeping him rear facing for at least 18 months, preferably longer. There is no danger with him having his knees bent and his feet against the back of the chair. I would hope that the car seat installer would tell you the same thing.

Re: WWYD - carseat related
If you are not willing to do it yourself then you really don't have any option but to wait it out.
We do it ourselves all the time, its pretty easy.

Glad you found somewhere to go. I'm a nervous freak too...I wouldn't do it myself either (but do know how to do it if I really needed to, plus we keep the manual in the car).

Sorry if this was already suggested:
Would you consider making the first available appt regardless of how long...have DH install the carseat forward facing in the meanwhile until the appt where you can have it checked out?

The stats are for the infant bases.
The convertible car seat is VERY simple to install.

MY DS is almost 14 months - and is close to 30lbs - and 34 inches long. His knees were literally in his chest.
I wanted to keep him rear facing as long as possible since it is the safest - but I was planning on changing it at 15 months so I'm not that far off.

I didn't want to have DH do it until we got an appt. This guy was amazing - no appt. necessary and he knew his stuff.
He also said that every carseat that is brought to him is installed incorrectly.
I have carseats for other cars so I don't need to switch it up. This is just my personal hangup - I need the carseat to be installed by a professional. Some of you may think I'm nutty but it's all good!

I hate to tell you that my DH is an EMT with the FDNY and is trained in installing carseats and it is perfectly fine to switch them at a year.
It is the parents' choice what they want to do, but it is NOT unsafe to switch to forward facing.

Re: WWYD - carseat related
Sam - I saw this - and that is so great that they are doing it!
I got it installed today and it worked out perfectly. The installer said that every single car that he sees where the person installs the carseat themselves is done wrong!!!
I personally just don't understand why people wouldn't take the 5 minutes to get it checked out. Different strokes I guess!

Carseat Chris - the one I normally go to in Garden City is a talker so he is normally about 20 mins or so.
This guy today was great. Literally my Sil and went - and were in and out within 15 mins.
