WWYD - House/children related
Here we are, late August and I'm still waiting on permits for my front dormer to go through. The project itself is supposed to take 6-8wks. I just learned today, there has been an objection on our permits I don't know what it is yet - so I have no idea if it's a minor thing or major issue - either way, it's going to delay our start date. As it was, we were cutting it tight to be done by my due date (Nov. 8) and I anticipate going a bit early (but who really knows).
So, now I'm crying at work b/c I'm stressing over everything: a) I'm worrying now about how I'll handle getting Ryan to someone and myself to a hospital if I go into labor and DH isn't around
b) the roof of my home may be off when I bring my NB home from the hospital
We can live in the house during construction, and planned on it (we'll have to obviously just live on the first floor). We planned on setting up our DR (which is empty) as our bedroom/Ryan's room and the rest of the house will remain intact. But now that baby will more than likely be here, should I put off my construction?
Should I wait on it until I go back to work in March?
WWYD? Either way, at some point we need to evacuate from our upstairs and have a crew there for 6-8wks. Would you do this if you could now potentially overlap with your maternity leave for say a month? Or would you just go back to work and do it then when the kids are in daycare?

Re: WWYD - House/children related
sorry to hear that you are stressing out.
For the going into labor issue, do you have family or friends or a neighbor who live close by that you can arrange to come over once you are in labor to watch Ryan?
I would reach out to a few people with different availabilities and see if they would be willing to help. Just thinking off the top of my head, in an emergency situation like yours, I would trust 3 of my neighbors to watch Frankie for a few hours if I needed to get myself to the hospital and until another family member could come and take him. I would definitely try to get a plan in place in case you do go into labor and DH is not there.
As for the dormer, if it were me and it wasn't completely necessary to do now, I might hold off until after maternity leave and the kids were in daycare. Construction always seems to take longer than they say, and I would not want to deal with it and the stress of a newborn and a toddler.
Hope you feel better.

Re: WWYD - House/children related
honestly I'd leave it like it is. the sooner the better and you'll be a zombie with the new baby and probably won't mind all sleeping in the same room. I would think it would be harder when everyone is back to work.
BUT I only have 1 kid so what the heck do I know??

This is a good point. And no matter what the baby will be in my room in the begining - it might screw us up to start construction when I return to work (b/c I know with Ryan I transitioned him to the crib when I returned to start getting back in the swing of things). I might ruin any chance for a routine if I move everyone downstairs when I come back to work.

I would keep the construction schedule as-is. There is never a good time to have major work done on a house, so you might as well get it over with as soon as possible. This way, once DC starts getting a routine, they'll have a permanent bedroom, and you can actually create a routine. If you wait, you'll make a routine now, then disturb it later, then create a new routine after the house is done.

I'd also leave it as is. We were delayed 6 weeks on the start of our project and have now been waiting since June 3rd for our C.O. You can never predict how fast/slow the project will go.
On a different perspective...You actually may find it easier on yourself to be home when different construction situations occur versus being at work and trying to make them from there.
