WWYD - moving to bed

Ryan knows how to get out of his crib. He did it a few weeks ago during a tantrum, once last week when DH put him up for a nap, and then yesterday he was in there and I was across the hall nursing Colin. I didn't hear his escape b/c i had Colin's sound machine on but all the sudden I saw his door knob twisting (but he can't open it) and a light knock follows. I open the door and he is standing there, "hi mommy, I don't want a nap today" Chat Icon

Anyway, we have his bed in a box in the garage. So we're ready when he is. But when I ask him if he wants to be in a big boy bed, he says no - that he likes his crib. And he truly does seem to like it in there, for the most part.

So WWYD if your 27 month old was hoppng over the crib when he felt like it? I'm not putting a crib tent up - he's too old. Should i just let him continue to hop out when he wants, or force the bed on him?

ETS: When he hopped out on a day DH was home, DH went in and had Ryan show him how he got out. Said it was a pretty "safe" climb Chat Icon Chat Icon

Hmm - I'm not sure.

You could do what I did with Jack when he TRIED to jump out....put him in a sleepsack at all times he was in the crib. Couldn't stretch his little legs enough to get over with it onChat Icon

Really? I can't imagine putting him in a sleep sack. He uses a pillow and blanket in there. I just don't see him in a sleepsack at this point. How old was Jack for that?

He started trying to jump when we brought Tyler home at 27 months old. So, he was in a sleepsack from 27 mnths to about 34 months. He wore Xlarge ones. He could run in those badboys Chat Icon

You could set up the bed in his room, but leave the crib there also (if there is space), so he has choices. If he sees the bed, he might want to try it out. One of my friends did this and said her son used the bed except for one time--after a couple weeks, they removed the crib and he never missed it. They also had a party the day they set up the new bed with a small cake and special sheets, just to make it all much more fun.

DS is still in the crib at almost 31 months, but he hasn't tried to climb out yet--if he did, I probably would try to move him to the bed.

I was thinking about doing this. Wondered if it would be too confusing -or annoying for us if he's indecisive every night Chat Icon but it might be worth a shot.

I always said, once he started escaping I'd be fine with putting him in a bed, I just feel bad that he isn't into it and says he still likes his crib.

Re: WWYD - moving to bed

I would force the bed. I would be worried that he would eventually hurt himself climbing out.

You could also move the crib to another room, but the main thing is to leave it together in case it really doesn't go well. Another friend took apart the crib and had a hard time with her daughter. You could try a crib tent over the crib, though I honestly never quite trust those.

Or, it might sound kooky, but you could try the crib mattress on the floor if it is firm enough. It won't be the permanent bed though, so I wonder if that's a good idea.

Most people tell me this goes better than they thought it would. I'm mainly stalling since I'm not looking forward to his being able to leave the bed easily. Good luck!

same. I moved Landon to a toddler bed at 21 months because I was so afraid of him falling. We moved him into a twin bed at 23 months with no problems. Naps are shorter now though, but that could also be because he is getting older.

I would move him to a bed. The climbing would make me nervous. DS has been sleeping in a full bed for the past couple months and it's been going well for the most part. However, he has many late nights where I find him hopping out of bed and wandering around the hallway when he can't sleep Chat Icon

Re: WWYD - moving to bed

I would move him to a bed. My DS is starting to climb and although he is pretty coordinated and I doubt he will fall, I am still nervous. I have heard about kids breaking their collar bone falling out of cribs. Anyways, I would really talk it up, maybe let him pick out some sheets (DS picked out a McQueen blanket although I have another non character set, it got him really excited).
