As long as they arent bothering me i'd let it go. It's hard to own a house here.

ITA!

I'm not sure what I would do in the OP's situation, but this is no justification for avoiding taxes and breaking the law.

I (and most homeowners on LI) manage to pay for our homes legally. I don't think it's much to ask that others do the same.

it's not really your business what goes on in another home, unless you feel it's a danger.

I'm a homeowner and don't love all my neighbors. But we can't control who lives around us- and jumping to conclusions about what may or may not be going on at our neighbors isn't fair to them. I wouldn't want my neighbors looking around my property- who I have living with me/staying with me, etc. would be none of their business. There are many reasons people have extended family live/stay with them, ilness, death, etc. What if they were going through something like that? Peeking in their windows wouldn't make that any better. It might create tension within the neighborhood.

I agree.

I struggle to pay for my home legally. I don't have an apt in my house. But I am just saying if it aint bothering me I don't care.

I'd much rather someone crack down on the people standing outside the home depot I pass every morning looking for work illegally but that wont happen either. Chat Icon

If you don't know for sure what is going on and they aren't bothering you then I wouldn't call. For all you know they could have a CO for a two family house and then you just caused tension with you neighbors by calling the town.

unless there was an incident where I felt my kids could possibly be at danger,
or they didnt take care of the house,
I wouldnt feel the need to report them.

Re: WWYD - Neighbor related

Are you sure that they dont have proper permits? Have you been to the town to see if they have applied to make it a two family.

I think that unless it is affecting your daily life I would leave it alone. If you choose to do something I would go to the town and not deal directly with the owner.

Re: WWYD - Neighbor related

is it just because there are alot of cars there that you think they have tenants because my house always has alot of cars in the driveway but only 3 people actually live in my house.
if it makes you and your family uncomfortable then i would do whatever it takes to make you feel safe

How do you KNOW what is going on? You don't KNOW who everyone who comes and goes is. As Kerie said, there could be a lot of cars there for a lot of reasons. Only DH, me and DS live here (and he ain't drivin anywhereChat Icon Chat Icon ) and we have 5 cars here, one of which isn't registered and stays in our driveway.

And I also agree with Summer that you can have weirdos in a one family house and the amount of people coming and going doesn't mean that there will be a weirdo there.

Unless you really find them to be distruptive or theatening, I wouldn't bother.

To be clear, I said I didn't know what I'd do in this situation b/c I'm not convinced from what's been said that there is an illegal apartment there. I'd see if you can get more information before doing anything drastic. There could be a perfectly legitimate reason for what you're seeing. Maybe they have friends or family going through a tough time and staying with them.

I'm hardly ever home, which means my blinds are closed a lot -- and always closed at night. I don't think that's anything suspicious at all.

On a different note, I don't appreciate it when people's reactions to someone actually caring about the illegal apartment problem on LI is "I'm more concerned about [insert something more horrible]." (Not calling out ANYONE in particular, as it's a common answer when this topic comes up...) Well, I'm more concerned about more horrible things, too, but that doesn't change the way I feel about illegal apartments. I'm perfectly capable of having multiple opinions and stances. If we were talking about something more horrible, I'd voice my opinion then, too, if I felt a need. I'm not going around snuffing out illegal apartments and turning people in -- I've never done it and I'm not aware of anyone who has an illegal apartment. That doesn't change the fact that I think it's a big problem on Long Island.

Re: WWYD - Neighbor related

I was just thinking about this during my run

and not that I condone illegal apartments- if this even is one

but personally If my neighbor needed extra money- I would rather them rent out an apartment- then go into foreclosure
