Ok, can i just ask why you would let your two daughters on the steps of the pool with no life gaurd on duty? I am just going by my kid, who would NEVER just sit there and wait. He would just jump right in not knowing how to swim. While i understand your upset, and yes it could have been worse, its no ones fault but your own. So, i dont think anyone should be fired, or your gym shoes replaced. I think as parents, WE are responsible for OUR children and their safety. Jmho.

Re: WWYD I saved my DD in our swim school pool

Update again- my phone is blowing up from the gym.

Pool Director called from home and apologized, spoke about how scary it was and let me know that they decided not to terminate Anna, but she has been spoken to by a few people and will be on careful watch. They are also looking into the pool policies, reviewing them etc. Mostly she was checking to see how I was doing and how Ellie was doing and just to apologize again for that split second etc etc.

I definitely appreciated the call and felt a lot better after it.

Shortly after that, I got a message from another person at the gym who works under the manager that she knows I've gotten emails as well as a call from the pool director and she wants to talk to me as well to see how we can move forward.

I think I'm going to think about this some more before I call back.Chat Icon

ETA the pool director told me Anna was definitely watching the pool, she was on the side trying to coach her, but since she's not a mom she didnt react the way we would

Re: WWYD I saved my DD in our swim school pool

ok a few things here.

one is I think that it is hard for all of us to really know what to say b/c we were not there...we don't know what the scene looked like and I certainly am not going to say someone should be fired b/c they did not react the way I did when it comes to my kid.

I think that it's interesting that he wants to show you the video. I am going to guess it will put the LG's actions in a far better light or else he wouldn't bother playing back such a traumatic moment for you.

as for what you'd like for recompense, honestly I don't know. I am thinking they will probably grant you something to appease you. however, it begs the question...how unsafe do you really think the place is? if all it takes is some assurances from the owner and a few monetary concessions to make you feel better about the situation, it can't be worthy of a firing.

to ME, a firing is you are walking out of there forever, and reporting them for negligence to the state. something of that type of behavior.

THIS. CRITICAL.
Thank God they are doing that, before another toddler isn't as "lucky" as yours!!!

Also, thank GOD they have a videotape to refer to, that will help them pinpoint where THEIR policies and procedures need some tightening up.

I'm sorry that it happened, BUT imho, they are asinine if they don't kiss your hiney right now, a lifeguard on duty has ONE job, scan that pool area and PREVENT things like that from happening. If she were doing her job, all she would've had to do is give a verbal "NO honey, wait for mommy" - problem solved. They didn't do that, and a tragedy *could* have occurred. They may not be so lucky "next time". But frankly it doesn't matter WHAT policies they have, if they are not enforced rigidly it's inevitable to me that something very serious will occur.

Thank God your little one is OK it must've been such a fright Chat Icon

I don't think I'd be staying there though, not because this happened but because the employees' initial responses were SO SO SO wrong. Chat Icon That kind of makes me feel like "management" tacitly approves that attitude, and if you're dealing with something as inherently dangerous as water, it would NOT be ok with me. Chat Icon

Personally I wouldn't feel comfortable continuing lessons there. Clearly it's not safe, and why are the life guards in street clothes?? That just doesn't make sense.

It sounds like it's not just that one particular life guard, since your husband had noticed something else a few days prior.

I'd take the meeting as an opportunity to get a full refund and then report them. Forget about a gift certificate..why would you even want to continue there??

I think it was probably not correct to say that to her, but I think it's probably right on the money.

I know unequivocally that something happening TO my child will look to my eyes so much more terrifying b/c he is MINE. he is MY LIFE. to someone else, they may not react the way i would or be as fast (or my in case, dramatic) as I would b/c they have a different world view/vantage point.

we don't know what it looked like or whether the instructor thought it was a danger or a teaching moment. I cannot say that she was right or wrong. I think every employee of that place will now be kissing arse b/c they know that MOM is upset, but I don't know that they believe it is justfiable under the circumstances.

i don't mean this as a direspect in any way to the OP. I would have been in that pool too without thought or question. clothes on...if I was carrying a brand new tv. doesn't matter. everything ruined without a care. b/c he is mine.

I agree with Colette- kids panic in those types of situations, I have seen it happen before - before I was a panic - and sitting on the outside of the pool telling her what to do wasn't going to help! She's 3.

I guess the question to ask is do you still feel comfortable going there? If not, I'd withdraw the kids and enroll them elsewhere.

If you do still feel comfortable, I would make myself familiar with the pool rules and make sure they are being adhered to when I was there.

Hope you both are doing well!

I was thinking the same thing. For some reason when I saw that they wanted to sit down with you and your DH to watch the video, it might look different after the fact then the way it looked in the heat of the moment when you are solely concerned about your child in the water.

Regardless of if there is a lifeguard on duty or not... but obviously the children do not know how to swim since this is their 3rd lesson... You do not let them near a pool especially if its over 1 ft without them holding your hand...

That being said, to the OP I can't imagine what you are going through right now and I am glad you posted your story...

My point was just that you cannot rely on other people to mind your children even if its a lifeguard etc... Hopefully people will maybe be more cautious when their child is in the pool thinking they can rely on the guards after hearing your story.

Re: WWYD I saved my DD in our swim school pool

I do think the gym should review its procedures. Me personally knowing a child can't swim would never allow that child anywhere near the water until proper supervision was available (instructor.) NOT SAYING ITS YOUR FAULT but we all know kids do whatever they want and if you give them the opportunity they will "jump." The lifeguard should of said "do not go in the water" or "stay with your mother until its safe" to your kids. So I am wondering was the life guard on duty in their chair? Sometimes they need to leave and although you might think they are on duty if someone is not in the chair then their is no life guard on duty.

I only comment because i was a jr. life guard and honestly the job sucked. Screaming kids running around like crazy, never listening to you and parents too busy gabbing to watch their own kids was hellish on a 16 year old. BUT i always knew it was so damn important to watch everyone in that pool it was terrifying to think I could be responsible for someone dying. I really think personal responsibility is always number 1, the person on duty is just a backup.

This is a WWYD thread. This site never ceases to amaze me in which directions threads go. We all know at the end of the day WE are responsible for our kids. The question is what would you do given that the lifeguards did not take action as your child was going under & pooh-poohed your response as an overreaction.

Personally, I'd take the opportunity to watch the video again to see if I did think there may have been coaching on the side or if they were watching. If not, I'd consider my options then.

I personally wouldn't take my kids back there so a gift certificate wouldn't work for me. I would be asking for a full refund, and no penalties to cancel the gym membership and take your business elsewhere.

OMG... I am so sorry this happened, Thank god your babies are safe!

I know I am in the minority here and will probably get flamed... But I don't see it as their responsibility if the teacher wasn't there yet and the class hasn't started. Maybe I am mis-reading...

But when we go to Safety Swim and the instructor isn't there yet we wait, and if my DD goes in... its MY responsibility b/c the other instructors are with their students... There is no central lifeguard looking over the entire pool... Maybe its different where you go, but I wouldn't expect anyone else to be watching but myself.

I agree with this. it sounds like you should have had the kids right next to you instead of walking around the pool area without youl.

Thanks for this.

So I spoke to the manager who reviewed the tape wiht me over the phone. The whole thing was 7 seconds long. She went underwater, I jumped to my feet and then the LG jumped to hers. She went under again and I got right in the pool and the LG watched. I carried her back to the chair and wrapped a towel around her and hugged her and then the LG came over and made that comment.

The manager says the problem lies within customer service, leaving me sitting there wet and acting like nothing happened, but thats it. She doesnt know what I want her to do about it, but kept repeating that I just happened to react before the LG in and the only reason I was in the water instead of her was that I was there first.

I called Suffolk County and made a complaint. They listened to me, commented that if the gym is saying I got to her first then that means the LG was too far from the steps and that the LG should always be sitting where there are small children b/c steps are the #1 issue. THey are trained to do so and its part of their certification.

We'll see what happens, but all I can say if the manager handled it better - everything could be totally different.

Anna came over after and said "ellie, if you just kicked you would have been fine, mommy didnt have to come in"

This is the part that steams me. My DS just started swimming lessons. He is 3 and has only had 3 lessons so far. There is no way in h3ll he has enough experience to "just kick" and get himself to the top of the pool. In fact, I am not sure he would even understand what she was talking about if she said that to him.

The lifeguard shouldn't have been coaching anyone from the side. Her azz should have been IN the pool, right next to yours, even if you made it in first. She's trained for this, I am assuming you aren't. I would want a refund and find a new place to have lessons.

This happened to me when I was 3...my mom was changing my baby brother's diaper and I ran out to the pool area and jumped in...a man (NOT A LIFEGUARD) saw me go in and not come out and pulled me out, they had to pump water from my chest and luckily I'm here today.

Personally I wouldn't go back because of the way the way they reacted...I don't want to blame anyone but its too close of a call to go back for awhile or not go back until I have help with me to watch all kids.

First, I am so sorry you and your babies went through this, that must have been terrifying for you Chat Icon I'm glad everyone is ok., that's the most important thing.

But I can say one thing for certain, if that was me - I'd have let DD finish her lesson only b.c I wouldn't want her traumatized but after that, without question, I'd never be back. It wouild only take that one time for me to say goodbye and I'd demand a full refund for any classes we didn't take.

The lesson in all of this is we as parents need to be vigilant - not that I think it's your fault - but no matter what, WE have the best interest of our child at heart - no one else. That's proof by you jumping in there with your clothes on and Ms Anna stnading on the sidelines. It is something that we can all remember.

Re: WWYD I saved my DD in our swim school pool

If I really felt uncomfortable, or enough that I would not want my children to stay there, I would ask for my money back and leave.

But if I decided to stay, I would not ask for any compensation. I feel asking for compensation takes away from your complaint. As if you are now looking for $$ out of it. This is in no way comparable but if I complain at a restaurant/establishment I especially tell them I don't want free stuff. I want my complaint taken very seriously. Seriously enough that I don't even care about $$$ back.

That is totally irresponsible of Ms. Anna! She should of been paying attention! She wasn't doing her job at all!

I just read some of your updates and that is BS that Anna was trying to coach her from the side of the pool. That is her trying to save her A$$.....
