WWYD-Not your typical situation (XP to special needs)

My DS is in 4th grade. He is dyslexic. He has been in an self contained classroom for the past two years. For a host of reasons, he leaves his class for math. He goes to a general education classroom. He did this last year in 3rd grade as well.

This year he is struggling with his math teacher, not the content, but the teacher. The teacher who he has for the rest of the day has been nudging me to have him stay in her classroom the whole day (which obviously isn't as easy as it seems) and I think she finds it very disruptive because the math teacher sends DS and the other boy who goes with him back 45minutes to an hour late every day.

I am torn for a several reasons:
1. He is on track to be mainstreamed next year and I don't want this to set him back.
2. I feel like he needs to be able to adapt to different classroom situations.
However, DS is usually very good with adapting to things.

He isn't doing excellently in math, but he is passing.

So, what would you do?

I think that you should talk to the math teacher about why he is getting sent back late. Other than that I wouldn't do anything.

My understanding is that is how she runs her classroom, she runs late.

Usually the kids are sent out of the room for subjects because of their ability is either needing or greater then that in the classroom. For that reason, I would not change. As for the teacher, kids need to start learning how to interact with all different types of people and at this age it is teachers. I would not move based on that reason either.

As for sending the kids back late; that is a teacher to teacher issue and not for you to get involved in.

Is he missing other subjects due to being late? Aside from that issue, what are the other issues he's having? If you think moving toward being main streamed next year is the right choice I would stick with it. Speak with both teachers about the timing issue, they need to work that our or the principal needs to get involved to ensure they do. I would want him to be pushed by staying in the less restrictive class, especially considering he was successful with that last year.

Leave him in the mainstream class. He needs a higher level learning and the structure of a mainstream class is entirely different than a self contained and if you want to mainstream him the next year he needs the experience.

As far as the coming back late - There should be a mainstream time in your IEP. If the time is any less or any more then written, they are violating your IEP. Call your special ed department.

I agree with the other poster that if this is part of his IEP then she needs to run on time for his and the other student's sake. She doesn't have a choice. It's unfair for your son to get sent back late.

Go with your gut. Your gut says to leave him with the math teacher, so leave him. If his teacher wasn't pushing for him to stay the whole time in her room, would this even be a thought in your mind? I'm guessing no, since otherwise he seems fine with going (seems like it bothers her though). I say let it be.

I would do nothing other than insist that the IEP be carried out as written. The self contained teacher should speak to the gen ed teacher and straighten out the lateness issue. If that is not resolved pronto, you should call the principal and/or the special ed director about it since that is in violation of his IEP.

Did you mean the special ed teacher wants your DS to stay in the self contained class all day? If so, no way. Do what's best for your DS, not the teacher.

Interesting, I am going to reach out to his self contained teacher to see if she's spoken with her (I believe she has) and if she can do the other stuff. A lot of this I feel like I am just going between them

He and a boy leave to go to math, and two girls come into self-contained in their spot and they are supposed to swap, but the boys are always late coming backChat Icon

You really shouldn't have to worry about this. I mean, if it was five minutes late, no big deal. But 40 minutes every time is significant and he is missing a lot in his self contained class.

In the districts I have worked in, the special education teacher is the point person responsible for coordinating and ensuring the IEP is being followed. Tell her we need to resolve this so my DS's IEP is being followed and you are in compliance. They created the plan, so it should be doable I would think(?).

If she can't resolve the issue herself with either the math teacher or the principal, you should speak up to building and/or special ed administration. If you want to step it up, suggest or ask for an IEP review and request that math teacher attend to discuss this. But if you are hoping to mainstream him next year, this gen ed placement is key. I wouldn't switch it unless he was really badly struggling with the work. Doesn't sound like the case.
