WWYD? someone giving you a check you couldn't cash
friends of my dh, never gave us a gift for dd baptism back in june. everytime i would see the wife she would say oh i keep forgetting to mail you the card...it is on my counter waiting to go out...blah blah. anyway, a week after dd first birthday party, they mailed us a card for the baptism. i look at the check, and it is dated for april. obviously they felt the need to send the gift but to write a date in april for my to deposit in december is not happening. so wouldyou just forget it (which im leaning towards) or would you call them? i feel like if i call i am being petty

I would just let it go. I'd feel really awkward calling about it.

I'm not sure I understand. April 09(before the Christening?) or April 2010?

well, what i think is that she was making up the part about having had the baby's gift the whole time and when she finally sent it she made a date up. it was dated april 2009. i asked a teller at my bank, and they said it was older than 6 months, so it was no longer good

Checks are considered stale dated after 6 months....
Honestly...
If you just put it in to deposit with a bunch of other checks it will probably go through without issue....
I would mail it back to her with a little note saying that you werent able to deposit it and say that you thought you'd like the check back for her records. Leave it up to her to send you another check or not...

can you see if someone at the bank would place a courtesy call and call them about the date on the check?

I'd leave it alone. One of the checks we got for our wedding bounced. We even had to pay a fee. I just wasn't comfortable saying anything to the giver and they never mentioned it to us.

My bank considers a check a stale check)uncashable) after 1 year. I would try to cash it at the bank and if they tell you its too old, call up and tell them that the bank won't cash it

Re: WWYD? someone giving you a check you couldn't cash
I would mail it back with a short note saying thanks for thinking of DD, we appreciate it, etc...then say, unfortunately the bank will not allow a check after 6 months...if she really wants your DD to get the gift she will redate it and send it back to you.

Re: WWYD? someone giving you a check you couldn't cash
Everything is electronic these days and I bet that it being stale dated isn't a problem, honestly.
And why assume she did that? Maybe it was an honest mistake?
ETA-Since you asked a teller, I agree with Heather, send it back with a note saying that for her records you'd like to let her know that it couldn't be cashed.
But maybe try to put it through first
