Wedding Gift Poll: do you give a check or cash?

Random poll of the day - I'm curious whether you prefer to give wedding gifts by check or cash... Or, what did you prefer to get at your wedding? I've included the option for boxed gifts, too... but I'm mostly curious about money gifts.

We got both for our wedding and I was suprised at the number of people who gave cash. I didn't prefer one over the other, though. No strong preference. We usually give a check (b/c then we can rest assured they received it)... but with cash, I wouldn't have to wait until the check clears.

We received both at our wedding. We were leaving 2 days later for the HM, so we deposited the checks and used the cash as spending $ on the HM.

I always give a check. We received mostly checks at our wedding, some cash, and several boxed/registry gifts.

i ALWAYS give a check. call me a pessimist, but I am worry that the card would get lost, or some waiter might take the cash out of the card, etc.

We got mainly checks at our wedding and I liked that because I wouldn't have liked the thought of being responsible for thousands of dollars in cash. we did receive a lot of cash gifts though... mainly from DH's family from Italy. His father put $1K in cash in our card... too me, that's way too much cash to not write a check!

i feel like checks are safer...that's usually my method of choice.

I'm from upstate. I had never heard of giving money for a wedding before moving down here 5 years ago. In fact, I knew my brother wanted money for his wedding, but I was told it was not in good taste to give it.

Now that I know the culture here, we always give checks for weddings around here. We are afraid that cash can get lost or stolen. If it's a wedding upstate, we give gifts from the registry and mail them a few weeks before the wedding.

With that being said: I have my neice's wedding in Florida in a few weeks. They are very young and are just starting out. Typically I would give a gift off the registry, but I know her POS father hasn't given her a dime to pay for the wedding. So, we are giving her a check.

So, it depends.

We always give cash because it is easier for the newlyweds to take with them on their honeymoon and just in general easier.

We always write a check in case the cards get lost or stolen but I do hate waiting for the couple to deposit them.

gift, though my husband would make us give money as well. It's NY thing that I;m not used to an don't understand. though we greatly did appreciate the money!!

I actually answered both check and cash. I like to give a check b/c I feel like if they lose the card for some reason I can stop payment and a few hundred dollars doesn't get lost forever.

But anyone who gave us cash for our wedding, I have given them cash in return, thinking that is their preference.

We didn't have a preference to cash or check for our wedding. My only fear was my MIL wasn't going to get to the bank quickly while we were on our HM and there would be a house fire and all the cash would be gone. I had several dreams of this, in the weeks leading up to our wedding we were gone for over 2 weeks and I didn't want it all to sit in the house until we got back so we had her make the deposit for us.

Always Check!! If the cards get stolen or lost for whatever reason its always safer

If I give a monetary gift I give a check. That way it can be replaced if lost.

We give checks. My friend brought cash to another friend's wedding and the card was stolen.

I always give a check, so I don't have to worry about it getting stolen & I can be sure they received it. Also it's easier for me to just write out a check than to go to the bank & withdraw the cash (I don't use ATM's).

Sometimes cash, sometimes check.

It really depends -- if DH has time, he'll run to the ATM at one point or another before the wedding and get the cash out of the ATM. Then, if he doesn't we'll just write a check. I've done both. For our wedding, we got mostly checks but we did receive a lot more cash than I thought we would.

No preference here!

Definitely CHECKS!!!! We recently gave a $350 gift THAT GOT LOST!!!!! I am so glad it was a check and not cash. We simply cancelled the check and wrote a new one. After this incident I will never give cash again.

If I have the cash on hand, then I'll give cash. If not, they get a check!

I answered other. I sometimes give cash or a check, depening on the wedding. I have been to a couple of wedding where I had things from the couples registry (like their good crystal stemware) shipped to them. To me it didn't make a difference if we got cash or check. We even received a couple of Amex gift cards, which came in handy on our honeymoon.

we give a check. We also got any money gifts in checks as well.
