WWYD: sort of a hypothetical situation

If you immediate supervisor asked you to report to him/her your co-workers time of arrival/departure to and from the office-to basically be a snitch--would you have agreed to it?

The reason I am asking is because there are all kinds of strange things happening in my office due to the latest acquisition of our firm by another company who is looking to clean up house. I feel that certain people have been asked to "report" things even though it is not really in their job description at all...

Luckily, nobody approached me with anything but it got me thinking about how comfortable I would be with that situation and curious about how other people would react to a situation of that sort.

To answer my own question: I wouldn't do it. It would make me very uncomfortable to be an informant for my boss and report on my coworkers behind their back. So, no I wouldn't participate in something like that...

A job description is not a comprehensive list of what you are required to do at the office. It is a representative list of what is generally expected of you. We always include the line "Other duties may be assigned."

To answer your question, yes I would do it. I would feel uncomfortable doing it, but it is certainly not an unreasonable request. I would suggest that my manager send out a reminder email discussing lateness & the importance of being on time, along with the consequences of being late.

ITA with this. I used to work for a financial firm where it was thought that the head of the group and one of the ppl in his group were having an affair. HR got involved (after a banker who used to ask me their whereabouts constantly Chat Icon contacted them) and I was forced to be on watch- even though I felt very uncomfortable about it. If I didn't do it- they would've moved me to a diff. area and found someone else to do it I'm sure....

Oh, absolutely! What I meant by "not in the job description" was that the people asked to do the informing are not supervisors of those they are watching so it is not really their care to be looking into when they come and go. Supposedly, they were specifically asked to "spy".

This whole things just rubs me the wrong way... Hey, may be someone is watching me as well...Chat Icon Chat Icon

Seriously, if they're slacking during an acquistion, they should be termed.

We had a situation like that -- people were leaving early and the receptionist was asked to jot down who was leaving before closing time. Of course she wasn't their manager and it wasn't in her job description but it didn't seem practical to have a bunch of managers loitering by the front desk watching for people to leave.

Overall, I agree with Barb's posts.

I would too. I have been asked this before, and as it was in a small office, I kind of let them know that there in/out times where being closely monitored and I suggested they try and show up on time.
