WWYD: Summer dilemma
I'm so frustrated. I went to the doctor tonight and despite my best efforts, my cervix shortened AGAIN.
Here's my issue. I've been watching my DH slave over our boat, his other baby, for the past few weeks so it can be launched this week. Putting the boat in the water is a huge expense. Between the initial transport to the launch, the marina and the fuel costs, it's a pricey hobby. But we LOVE it.
I'm afraid my OB is going to put me on bedrest. If I'm lucky and she doesn't, I'm afraid she's going to tell me no boat. My poor DH asked me tonight whether we should even put it in the water at all. He looked so sad and I felt so bad. I'm just worried that if I'm on bedrest, I won't be taking home a paycheck and we will need any extra money we have. Not only that, but we won't really be using it either. On the other hand, this is a whole lot of what ifs and it would really stink if I told him no and everything worked out.
Anyone have any experience with boating while preggo? Initially my OB said it was not an issue if it was a flat day (we have a big boat..it's not like it's getting smashed around too much by waves) but that was before all of this hoopla. Any advice?

Re: WWYD: Summer dilemma
I don't know much about being on a boat with a short cervix, but to be honest a short cervix is a very serious issue.
I'm sure you feel terrible that you might not be able to enjoy the boat completely, but if your cervix keeps shortening...you must definitely can wind up on bedrest. With the cervix issue it's not one of those you just sit around, they really want you to lay all the way down and have NO pressure whatsoever on the cervix, including sitting. No walking around except to shower and go to the bathroom either.
Do not know how feasible this could be out on the water on a boat. Really think long and hard about the pros and cons of the situation before deciding to put the boat out in the water and go through all the expense, if you guys can't fully enjoy it.
The boat will still be there next summer -- and you will likely have tons of good times to be had in it....just for me, I would want to be safe than sorry.

Ugh I know you are totally right. I just don't want to have to face my reality. I feel so bad as it is that DH is like an indentured servant right now and then to dry dock his escape is making me feel even worse.

Re: WWYD: Summer dilemma
I had cervical issues with my first. I was on modified rest from about 22 weeks on. I basically could work and come home and thats it nothing strenuous. besides the being on the boat, remember you have to walk to it, climb up into it, get out. its all a little difficult to do preggo regardless. how far along are you?

Re: WWYD: Summer dilemma
I have cervix issues and although I might have gotten on a boat earlier in my pregnancy I don't think that I would after I was 24 weeks or so.
Not only that... but with a short cervix they don't want u to be somewhere very bumpy because that puts more pressure on ur cervix and well... on a boat its really bumpy.
Unfortunately, I would skip getting on a boat this summer and save urself the expense of having it on the water. I know its sukks for you and ur DH but you have to think about the big picture. The sacrifices as a mom start way before the baby actually comes.

Do not feel bad -- you're carrying a human being!
It's not like you are just saying "no I don't want you to do this just because......" there are good reasons for it and in the grand scheme of things, one summer isn't so bad.
I know the guilt is hard when you want your DH to be happy too, but while he will be disappointed, the ultimate reward is your and the baby's health and he will understand...even if he has a little pout at times!

You are a good wife to be so concerned about him. But you are carrying his child, and I'm sure that although he is disappointed, he is more than happy to make this sacrifice to make sure you and the baby are safe and healthy.
It's only one summer. By next summer you'll be out on the boat with the baby, and this temporary disappointment will be a faint memory.

Re: WWYD: Summer dilemma
I am going to get my cervix checked again today...so I feel your pain It DOES stink, but rather than waste the money I would shelve the boat for this season, just think next yr it will be you, DH and BABY on the boat

Re: WWYD: Summer dilemma
Thanks everyone. I appreciate the advice. I really wish we had planned better and I skipped being preggo or this preggo in the summer. Wah. Alright...I have to end this pity party. Thanks again!
