WWYD? Work & parenting related

If you had the following choice, WWYD?

1) You currently have a job that you love, people that you enjoy working for, a great salary, decent hours, flexible boss BUT you've been told that there is a 50/50 chance either the company will go under this year and you will be laid off OR it will be taken over in a merger where you may or may not have a job with the new company and the company may be completely different. You can stick it out here and see what happens in the upcoming year and look for a new job if you get laid off.

2) take a new job in the same role, same pay, where it is rumored that the people are not that nice and MUCH more hours initially (10-12/day), and you would basically not see your 10 month old DS all day, BUT you have job security and maybe the new place will not be so bad after all.

I know what my gut answer is, which is option 1, but DH and I are really stressing out about the state of the economy and think that option 2 may be the more prudent decision.

I just can't bear the thought of not seeing DS at all during the week. Chat Icon

Are both jobs in the same industry? Is it a stable industry?

For sure, like 100% sure, no, because it is a financial company and the way the economy is, who knows.

But with Option 1, it's a 75% chance that I won't have a job (50 % of getting laid off if the company goes, and 25% of getting laid off even if we merger)

Re: WWYD? Work & parenting related

If it's in Finance then I would say stick with number 1. I am in the same industry and its so shaky everywhere that IMO if number 2 ends up having layoffs as the least tenured person, you would be cheaper to layoff as other folks with more time accrued in the company would qualify.for packages. Also it is soo hard to find a job you like and most importantly time with your DC is priceless that unless number 2 was a definite no layoff situation I wouldn't move.

#1, you can't get this time back with your children.

If you get laid off, can't you get unemployment for a little while?

Re: WWYD? Work & parenting related

I would probalby take the first option also. First off you don't know for sure that you will be laid off. Second of all, if you are you will get unemployment for up to 9 months now, which gives you time to find a better job and time to be home with your child while still bringing in some extra cash.

I would go with option one, if you get laid off you get unemployment and hopefully a severance package. I could not bear not seeing my DS , no money in the world is worth that Chat Icon

I am in finance as well, and surprised I still have a job at this point

Re: WWYD? Work & parenting related

I think it depends on my financial position.

My instinct is to go with #1 and ride it out as long as you can. However, you need to determine whether or not living on unemployment and/or severence less the cost savings of not having to pay for daycare would be sustainable for you and your family.
