WWYD? would you bring a 1 month old to the hospital to visit your fil?

My fil has had stage 4 brain cancer and was given 6 months to live when he was diagnosed 4 years ago! we never thought he would make it to our wedding or even be around to find out we were pregnant!

unfortunately, he was admitted to the hospital about 2 days after the baby was born so he has been unable to meet his grandchild.
we really thought we were going to lose him this time. he was on a respirator ( which he just pulled it out himself 2 days ago!) and things were not looking good.

now he is out of icu and in his own room and is stable.
my husband wants to bring our baby to see him just in case he never makes it out of the hospital ( anything can change with his health). he wouldnt take the baby out of the carrier and it would be a very short visit.

what would you do?
i really dont want to bring the baby to the hospital.not even for 5 minutes. there are airbourne illnesses and this makes me nervous!!

i will be checking with the pediatrician but i am curious to hear what others would do in my situation.
even if we get the ped's approval i am weary.

please help!!

Normally i would never ever bring a one month old to a hospital but in this situation I probably would. With the ok of a ped of course. I couldn't imagine the guilt I would feel if he never got to meet his grandchildChat Icon

ITA. If DH is very close to his father and it is important to him, I would make this exception with the Ped OK.

I lost my father last year, and if there was the slightest possibility of him meeting DS before he passed, I would have done it.

PGer crashing, but I would. My grandmother passed away from cancer just before we told our families that we were pregnant. If she was still alive and in the hospital and there was even the slightest possibility she could see our soon-to-be-born baby before she passed, i would bring him in so she could meet him. I would give anything to have her back for even one moment just so she could meet him in a couple of weeks when he is born. I think that with a dr. ok (which I think it would be for a short visit), it would do wonders for your FIL and your DH. I'm so sorry for you guys and what you're going through. Chat Icon

I agree with everyone else. Under normal circumstances, I would not bring the baby, but ithis is not a normal circumstance.

In a matter of life and death, with the possibility that my FIL could get to meet his grandchild before passing away, I would do whatever it took to let him meet DC.

Absolutely. I can't imagine not allowing it.

I am a huge advocate of staying home with a newborn - my youngest was given a spinal tap for spiking a fever, so I get that fear. But with a month old & a dying FIL, I couldn't be able to imagine the regret if he never got out nor do I think my DH would be able to forgive that.

Without a doubt, I would bring my child to see his grandfather. This is a special exception, I would want my child to meet him.

Yes I definitely would. My uncle had a heart attack when DS was a month old and we brought him to the hospital so he could meet him. DS is fine. We left him in the carrier and covered him with a blanket when walking through the hallways.

Re: WWYD? would you bring a 1 month old to the hospital to visit your fil?

Absolutely. DH's grandmother passed away when DS was 2 weeks old. He was her first great grandchild. We brought him to meet her a few days after he was born and I have no regrets. I would've felt horrible if he hadn't met her.

I also think it's fine to bring a newborn out in public in general this early, but that's on another thread that has been going back and forth all day. You obviously just need to be smart about it.

I agree with everyone else, as long as the ped. says it's OK, I would bring the baby. This is just too important to miss.

Re: WWYD? would you bring a 1 month old to the hospital to visit your fil?

I say bring the baby to the hospital. I was in a similar situation. My dad was in the hospital battling leukemia. While it might be different because my DD was 8 months, I still has big time reservations about it. It was the best thing I did. My dad loved my DD so much and it made him so happy to see her.

Unfortunately, my dad died a couple of months later but I was so happy I saw the joy on his face when he saw her. He was in tears when i brought her up.

My ped. told me not to, but I went against his wishes. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon for DH's dad.

Re: WWYD? would you bring a 1 month old to the hospital to visit your fil?

I would and did. My father had a stroke when he was driving and the paramedics called me from his cell phone. I couldn't get in touch with anyone and had noone to watch the baby at the time so I just dragged the baby in the car and went to the hospital. DS was 2 months old. However, the ICU people wouldn't let me in with the baby!

I also agree-I think airborne illnesses are pretty rare-cover the carseat with a blanket(and throw it directly in the laundry when you get home) sanitize your hands while you are there and before you leave. I think it would be a special gift for your fil and dh

in this situation, it wouldn't even be a question--i would absolutely bring him.

i would also take him out of the carrier so FIL can hold him and get pics with his grandson. it will be the only pics your son has with this granddad.Chat Icon

I would. Your FIL is probably around other cancer patients not sick illness patients. I would feel guilty if he didn't get to meet his grandson.
Edited to add: I would even take the baby out of the carrier and let FIL hold him if he is able to.
