X-post: Alumna sues college because she hasn't found a job

http://www.lifamilies.com/chat/topic-444496-1.html

I thought a lawsuit story belonged in NFR, but since the lawsuit is related to not getting a job, TBTB decided it's a Career story. Oh well, we can discuss it over there, then.

Re: X-post: Alumna sues college because she hasn't found a job

any reasonable employer would pounce on an applicant with her academic credentials, which include a 2.7 grade-point average and a solid attendance record.

She needs a wake up call.

Re: X-post: Alumna sues college because she hasn't found a job

I understand her thoughts and frustrations. It's extremely frustrating to spend all the money on a degree with the hopes of getting a job using it. When you can't get the job, sometimes you get the why did I even bother (especially when at the age of 26/27/28, I'm sure she has friends that have no college education and are doing fine for themselves).

However, that being said, it is not the college's responsiblity to get her a job. They educated her, so that she may go out into the real world to "try" to get a job within that field.

Career services and alumni groups can only do so much to help her. Imagine if a college guarenteed every graduate a job in their field. That is just insane, impractical, and unrealisitic.

Re: X-post: Alumna sues college because she hasn't found a job

i...can't....omg.....this...is sending me into violent convulsions.

are you #$*(@ kidding me?????

seriously its just another example of how kids today are coddled and spoiled and its about instant gratification...it has to be NOW NOW NOW! They grow up into spoiled adults who think they DESERVE some job to land at their feet!

Its a tough job market---what does she expect with her mediocre record?

Disgusting...absolutely disgusting!

ETA: Her quote from the article....
"She suggested that Monroe's Office of Career Advancement shows preferential treatment to students with excellent grades. "They favor more toward students that got a 4.0. They help them more out with the job placement," she said.

Re: X-post: Alumna sues college because she hasn't found a job

I am so annoyed about this. I work in the same office with Alumni at my job and its like they expect Alumni to find everyone jobs and network for them. That is what career services is for (section of the college) we host job fairs, career fairs, career forum's etc. People actually expected to get HIRED when going to these events and didn't understand that is was there for them to network and present themselves to possible job prospects. A few actually asked the director of alumni to write their resume for them!!!!

I graduated with a four year degree and I make 30K a year, i am happy to be employed and have health benefits but no paid time off. It is my fault for not aspiring for a better job but i picked security. This was my decision not the fact my school "failed" me. This individual needs to understand personal responsibility - try for a job that is not your graduated path, something outside of it and maybe then you will get hired. Not all degrees equal instant good pay and perks or even a job. Welcome to real life!

The sense of entitlement just blows me away.. wow.

grow up, get a grip, stop your whining and go out and focus on getting a job, any job - cuz with 2.7 gpa you're not at the top of anyone's list unfortunatley.

NO ONE is going to hand you anything in life for free.

I have to tell my DH about this- he will crack up OR start screaming. He is a professor and he has found that sense of entitlement running rampant. He has lots of students who email him after the semester has ended to complain about not getting As and Bs. Usually they think that showing up is enough- forget doing the assignments well or at all.

"They're supposed to say, 'I got this student, her attendance is good, her GPA is all right -- can you interview this person?' They're not doing that," she said.

Yeah, that's a glowing review Chat Icon

Re: X-post: Alumna sues college because she hasn't found a job

I read about this last week and told DH.

There is NO WAY she will win. She paid for her education not to have a guaranteed job. It never said either that she could not move OOS to find a job.

In that case, everyone would sue and schools would close.

They helped with placement. They never said she would be guaranteed of a job.

And now she actually made sure she will never been employed. I would not hire her. Obviously she is not that smart and with this lawsuit it really shows her lack of intelligence.

You can have a 4.0 student mess up at interviews. At some point you have to use your degree, your common sense and fly free like a bird. It's up to each of us to "sell" ourselves to an employer.

Re: X-post: Alumna sues college because she hasn't found a job

i find this both hysterical that she really thinks she is entitled to a job just because she graduated with a whopping 2.7gpa no less, and extremely sad that this is really what people think

we are in a recession people are losing their jobs left and right, what makes her, right out of college with no real experience any more deserving of a job than those working for companies 20+ years who are losing their jobs.

i really hope the courts just throw this right out
and shame on the lawyer who is representing her and perpetuating this ridiculous sense of entitlement that is now running rampant throughout our youth today

ITA and in these trying times with the way the job market is she is even lucky if she lands an interview. I hope the judge laughs this out of court because she is not alone there are alot of other recent grads who are having issues to landing a job after graduation. What makes her so special? Chat Icon

I REALLY would love to know who her lawyers are. Was that in the article? I cannot imagine that they will escape this one without Rule 11 sanctions.
