X-Post from pregnancy...Important registry question for 1st time Mommy....

Figured I'd ask all the BTDT Mommy's who know for certain what is easily movable, and what's not....TIA!!!

Ok, so I'm not sure how many of you know my story, but I am pregnant with an "oops" baby (and I say that completely lovingly, it's just a fact) and the father is just a "friend of mine." We agreed to raise the baby together but in two separate loving homes.

What are the important things that we'll BOTH need to have in our homes (or for travel) that aren't necessarily easy to travel with on a daily basis or easily packable into a car?? Things that I'll either register for (2) two or we'll end up buying a carbon copy of...

I have thought of the following so far:

---crib
---dresser
---changing table
---diaper genie
---car seats? I'm not sure if we can just have two bases and switch back and forth between cars?

Anything else you ladies can add on?

First off - CONGRATULATIONS!!! It's so wonderful that your friend will be in your child's life!

As far as what you need 2 of... I think you have the big stuff covered. For the infant seat, all you need to do is buy one seat and an extra base and you'll be set till the baby turns 1. Then you need to buy 2 convertible seats. For the small stuff, you will need double the diapers and wipes, double the baby Tylenol (just in case) and diaper creams and stuff. It's so much easier to have 2 than to have to carry this stuff back and forth. You may also want double the bottle and nipples, and 2 infant bath tubs - again for a matter of convenience.

Not sure if you are registering for a bouncy chair and swing and stuff. You may want to get 2 of the chairs and maybe one full size swing and one travel size swing.

Congrats again and feel free to FM if you have any other questions! Chat Icon

Congratulations!
You should definitely register for 2 convertible car seats....they're expensive and difficult to transfer from car to car regularly.
It's difficult to tell what a baby may or may not like, so for the items like bouncy seat, swing, etc, you might only want to go with one, and then get another if the baby really takes to it.

OK well since you asked.. Chat Icon

Make sure you register for double the crib sheets, burp cloths (LOTS OF BURP CLOTHS - I had no idea something so little can burp and spit up so much), receiving blankets and bibs as well so you each have your own stash at your homes. When you register for a stroller, try to find a light one so you can take it back and forth with you. Or, while he is small, you may want to get one stroller and one snap and go that you can attach the car seat too. So that way you can both take baby out. OOOohhhh - and 2 mobiles or crib toys (like F-P Rainforest or Aquarium that attach to the crib). He won't use them till he is about 3-4 months but you might as well throw 2 on your registry!

EDITED to say "he" - I saw that you are having a Chat Icon !!!

OK, do you have a picture of this? Or, a recommendation for a brand? Chat Icon I really have NO idea what to look for. I've been looking at the "travel systems"---is this what that is??? But, I don't think that'll be very "lightweight", so I'm so confused. I think I have to start doing a LOT more research!!! Chat Icon

The graco metrolite travel system is actually very light. We have it and love it. Also two bouncers and maybe two exersaucers? My DD loves both of them.

Yes....LOTS of bibs and burp cloths!!! As many as you can fit!!! It's amazing how many of them you'll go through in a day!
I would recommend each of you getting 2 Ultimate Crib Sheets...it's a sheet you snap onto the crib over the crib sheet....so if there's an accident in the middle of the night, you just take that sheet off and replace it - instead of having to remove the bumper, mattress, crib sheet and then put them all back on.
I had the Grace Snap n' Go stroller...the infant seat fits into a base in the car, and then right onto a really really light stroller. I loved it and it's so light you'd only need one infant seat, and stroller, with a base for each car.
Two highchairs will also be helpful....
I'll keep thinking.

You can get the travel system like you were thinking and this is a picture of the snap and go.

2 high chairs. you don't want to lug them back and forth. or get the ones that attach to a seat, they are smaller, and lighter. but still a pain to travel with.

Ah ha! I just googled the metrolite...now I see. It does look pretty lightweight and easy to use. I think I'm still kinda confused though. If I register for the "convertible car seats" would I still need the travel system? I assume it's just one or the other, right? But, I would also think with a newborn, it's much easier for them if I can leave in the carrier when sleeping after a car ride, and just remove the whole thing from the car (with baby still in it), instead of lifting baby out of a car seat and into a stroller? Am I right to think that the convertible car seats are for when baby is a little older??? But, I should still register for them because they're expensive. I think I get it now?

Correct! The convertible car seat is for when baby is 20 pounds and 1 year old. It's for down the road but because they are expensive, you may want to put them on your registry in case anyone wants to get them for you as a present. I just bought 2 of the Evenflo Triumph convertible car seats. It is highly rated in Consumer Reports and your child can use it till they are 50 pounds which is great. They are about $130 a piece.

While your son is small, you will probably keep him in his infant carrier and attach that to your stroller (your travel system) or snap-and-go.

Actually, most babies go into the convertible car seat well before a year old....so she might need it sooner.

You will need a infant car seat to go with the Graco Snap and Go.

I loved our Graco Snugride infant car seat. You can buy two bases for it and it fits the Graco Snap and Go.

Correct me if I'm wrong my fellow posters....
The convertible car seat is a lot bigger and fits the child for a much longer time. I think most people get the infant car seat first and use it til about a year (or until they can no longer carry the child in the carseat) and then get the bigger convertible seat when the child is too big to be carried in the infant carseat and is close to outgrowing the infant seat.

The car seat issue was so confusing for us. We actually had to leave the store when we got to the car seats during registering. We got overwhelmed, it's so much. We did research at home and came back and just bought what we wanted.
